Had several Harleys 20 some years ago, last one was a 72 FX Shovel, sold it after we started having kids. I think the wife got tired of hearing me whine, started telling me to get another one after the kids moved out. A friend through work wanted to "get rid of his", emailed a pic and the price. I couldn't believe that an 02 anything was worth $16K so I started looking. Saw the new Fat Bob on the Internet, $15K, that was it. Went home and told the old lady she completely screwed up and started making room in the garage. A month later, it's a "BOY"... or should I say "BOB".
AH crap I don't like telling this one 'cause I blew a pile 'o money doing it but here goes! I'm 48 years old, I walk into the dealer to look at sportsters to find out what they cost because three other people I know bought bikes in '07. Why sportster I dunno ,I always wanted one since about 1974 or summat .Not that I knew anything about harleys('cept the name) my only other bike was in '77 and ws a'71 yammie ct1 enduro 175 . Anyhow this was in late '07 when the can. $ was equal to the american,so our prices were way down. I wasn't intent on buying,i rarely do anything on a whim especially on such a large purchase. Lo and behold two days later I'm being given the delivery breifing against the rep's advice that I would not be content and would be back to get something bigger.
I lasted three days and was back there and looked at the FatBob . I was instantly felled. less than a week after that i had taken a dive to trade in the sporty and didn't need the del. breifing --> it was all too fresh in my memory.
Sure I lost a pile a money and I steam myself over that now and then, but all I got to do is sit on her ,take her for a spin and I totally forget any money was involved what-so-ever. I'm 50 now and am beginning to see a scheem forming for my retirement, God be willing! DONE!!!
I almost did the same thing brother. I was bent on the Iron but was talked out of it by all my biker friends, I rarely listen but did this time for some reason and got the glide custom, been a month and im on it every decent day god gives us up in the PNW.
Buddy was going through a divorce (with huge CC debt) and needed to sell his '97 Wide Glide with 10,100 miles. Purchased in November 2004 from him for $9,500...he had paid around $18K sometime in '02.
Well I've been riding a long time and have had several bikes, still have 4 at the moment. My doctor gave me some bad news and told me to go and do whatever I've always wanted to do. I always wanted a HD but too cheap to put out the money. So I had my brother drive me around to each of the dealers in my area and found an 06 WG in the color at the price I wanted and wrote a check. That was 3 yrs ago and I'm still alive and now riding again.
I had ridden dirt bikes back before I needed to shave. I had a couple of street bikes later on. In 2007, I finally got into a Sportster 1200c and loved it dearly. Had a stage 1 done and put a lot of other crap on it so that it was just the way I wanted it. But then (violin music starts up), I was notified by the dealer I bought the Sportster from, about the trade-up deal offered by the MoCo. If it hadn't been for that, I'd have kept the sportster. But, I went in and just fell in love with the FXDL. It had come down to either that or the Night Train. The Dyna felt better to me (probably because of the handle bars being further back). After 4 hours of negotiation at the first dealer ship, I had to walk because they wouldn't go under $16600 OTD. I went to the other dealer in our area and left with the bike for $14600 OTD.
I was involved in an accident about 2 months ago. Bike has been repaired and my ribs have finally healed. I considered selling it, but just couldn't bring myself to do it. I get so much pleasure from riding it. I'm going to mostly leave it stock as it generally has everything I want already on it. I think it is the best bike I've ever ridden.
Had the Sportster 2 years (about 10 years of having nothing), liked it just fine and wanted to keep it just to prove everyone wrong who said I'd "trade up," but esp. those insecure fake riders who call it a Skirtster, etc.
However, Harley hooked me with the full MSRP on trade-in deal, and I'm glad they did. I've only had it 10 days but I'm already totally comfortable on it and have never looked back. This one I plan on keeping a long, long time.
I've wanted a Harley for a long time. I walked in so many dealers just to look. I was embarrassed of my 750 1969 Honda. It sounded like a Harley because the exhaust was bent. Poor thing had no pick up off the line but it was a bike and all I could afford at the time. Some thing would brake and I would put money that I thought was a waste, but I wanted to ride so I kept on putting money into it. One year the starter went out, cable broke, and I forgot what else. I put it in the garage and left it to rest. My girlfriend at the time asked what happen and I told her I was just tired of the thing. I love to ride but I was wasting money and my time. Years past and the girlfriend became the wife. I sold my Honda to a friend for a couple of bucks and the wife seen I did not want to let it go. She said one day you will get your Harley. I still would go to the dealer and look at bikes. She said start to save up and in a couple of years you will get it. Well **** happens so every time I saved a couple of hundred or a grand I would have to repair our cars, fix the garage roof, new AC, and so on. My Harley was slipping out of my hands every time. I told my wife I wanted to enjoy riding a bike now so maybe I would get another Honda. She told me not give up on my dream. Some thing about the Deuce caught my attention so I was focused to save up for it. Every time I would go to the dealer the Street Bob got my attention. Every dealer I went to I would always end up by the Street Bob. I walked into one dealer and a Street Bob caught my eye. It had the Willie G Skull add on, forward controls, blacked out lights, stage one kit, laid down brake light, python exhaust. It had every thing I would want a Street Bob to have (yeah right). So I told the wife I changed my mind and I really wanted her to see what I wanted and what I was going to start saving for. We went into the dealer and she liked it too. A sales man came up to us and asked if he could help. Told him I was dreaming and just looking at this time. After he left my wife said get it. I told her that I did not save anything yet and there was no way. She told me that she has been saving money for my bike on the side and did not want to tell me until she had enough for a decent down payment. She wrote a check in the amount of 4 grand and we worked out a deal. They said the extras were at a discount but would be around 3 grand. We worked out a deal with the manager and got the extras for half price. Its great when you have a woman on your side that really cares and helps you reach your goals and dreams. Well I love my bike and have her to thank for it. Now I have all of you to thank for giving me ideas on how send any extra cash I get.
Had desired a crotch rocket as a younger man but had enough brains to stay away from them... I have a speed problem.... got a four wheeler to scratch the itch for awhile.. never wanted an HD , always thought they were junk?? The last few years started to get the itch again only now was heavily drawn to the HD name and sound.... Anyway, so i started doing some research and realized HD's were actually pretty good products... After the first time of seeing a Nightster i knew for sure it had to be a harley!!! Was completely intent on buying a beat up 1200xl and making my own nightster a friend at work turned me on to an 04 fxdi , i knew the XL wasnt great for 2 up???..... anyway the dyna was on ebay by a guy that lived about 4 miles from me... Went and looked at it and knew i wanted it... He said he would take $7500 for it if it didnt sell on ebay.. What a long week!! I took it home the next week and have been changing it to suit me ever since.... that was 12/08...... Btw this is my first street bike ever...so glad i bought a dyna...................................tim
