That was another one of my concerns, i've got the sears jack. I was actually thinking about buying a couple of scissor jacks to support the back end of the frame and the tire, just to make sure the front end removal doesnt cause a scary shift in the weight.
I have done copmplete front end swaps with the bike sitting on a poor mans lift. 6x6 block and some 1x4's do it everytime. The bike will not fall over. Pull your forks out of the tress to work on them, it will make it much easier, and faster in the long run.
the rear end is gunna have to be off the ground as well because I'm getting the shocks done too, thats why I'm going to use blocks or scissor lifts to support the rear.
As for the PVC pipe, which diameter did you use? Sounds like a great idea!
Even doing rear shocks, the wheel never has to leave the ground...you lift the frame enough to take the load off the shocks, unbolt them and adjust the height of the bike to line up the new shocks.
If you are getting them powdered, then just leave the wheel on the ground untill you get them back.
It's not my bike so use the scissor jack if you want but seems unnecessary to me...
