I so HATED the stock grips that I'd say moving to the Nostalgic grips was the most essential mod I made. Love them. And the saddlebags. .. well this is my only vehicle, so they're a must for me.
I put the SE slip-ons on and for me they have the perfect sound (and they are louder than stock). And I put on the Heavy Breather and like it though I'm not sure it's a cost-effective mod, I got the biggest performance bump by just adding the slip-ons. But I do love the look and the attention it gets.
The Tru-Track was put on and transformed the handling. I'd hate to not have that. Recommended.
My best upgrade was the V&H Big Radius black and Stage 1 with SERT....I love setting all the car alarms off when I ride through downtown! and my wrinkle black horn cover!
I thought the dealer was being generous when he gave me a copy of the parts catalogue with my new Fat Bob. I guess they know what they're doing. So far only Rush Slip ons, but plenty on the wish list.
I did'nt expect any performance increase, but the bike now seems to make the bike pull better at lower revs.
I think your on the right track. If it were me....I would search the Dyna classifieds and buy a used set of pipes (V&H Short Shots, Big Radius or a 2 into 1 if available). Everybody has different tastes, but I think you will be happier changing pipes than just adding mufflers. But I like a fairly loud bike. We put short shots on my wifes FXDF and they were fairly affordable new.
Next buy a PCV from Fuel Moto for $300 ( or once again find one in the classifieds).
Last order you SE High Flow AC from Zonattis website (probably around $230). You should still have a little extra for some Kury ISO grips or some other bling.
I just got my bike back today from the shop & wanted to post an update of what I was able to do on a budget of $1k for my first project.
Bought new SE Heavy breather, new SERT, used Rinehart 2-1, Installed & Dyno for $1200.
I went over my budget which I figured but was able to accomplish more than I thought. I love the upgrades & doubt I will have any regrets w my 1st performance mod.
I have to say thanks for everyone's feedback on this forum. I would have never had a clue if it wasn't for everyone help. Most appreciated &
