Default Newbie looking for exhaust advice

Ok -sorry if I am beating a dead horse, but I have been getting such conflicting information. HELP!

I have my first Harley (2006 Low Rider) - coming back to riding after a 25 year absence.

Anyway, hate the stock mufflers, but I don't like a really loud exhaust (I do want a deep rumble sort of sound however).

I have been leaning towards Khrome Werks slip ons and a SE air cleaner / remap.

Here are the issues I want help with:

1. Warranty issues. My dealer will honor the warranty with these pipes, but not guaranteed that other dealers will do so. If I buy the SE I slip ons, warranty is fine everywhere.

2. Dealer says they have found remaps are often not necessary on the '06 models with the SE air cleaner - that the O2 sensors compensate enough. That doesn't sound right to me, and I would be concerned about running lean and overheating. Any opinions on this?

3. If I do want to remap - I can either do a Stage 1 download, or a Power Commander. Advantage to PC is it can be removed, but you do introduce more failure points (reliability issues) and it isn't inexpensive.

So - can people here give me the benefit of your experience.

a. Any comments on sound difference between SE I slip ons and Khrome Werks slip ons?
b. Comments about warranty concerns?
c. Remap vs. no remap with 02 sensors?
d. Stage 1 download vs. Power Commander for this type of configuration?

I appreciate it!! Thanks.... Warren

2-1 exhausts are deep. Short drag pipes are too raspy and hollow for me. I'm waiting on a thunderheader for the bob, but its rather loud from what I've heard (I don't mind). I think Bub's sound pretty good for a 2-2. They have some pretty trick setups. Please don't get the SE II slip-ons. Take your time, do some research (use search button) and shop around for the best sounding, best priced setup. Exhaust is one of the major components that sets a bike apart from others. As far as warranty goes. It's a hit or miss thing, with the dealer having the most pull. I am not real concerned with warranty issues right now. I wouldn't be happy with a stock bike, so the bike won't stay stock. I have heard many negative things regarding the harley download. Do some research on that too. I went with a pcIII with O2 sensor eliminators. Ten people will give ten completely different opinions on setups. Any change to air flow will require a remap of some sort. Good luck.

1. Warrenty. See the Moss-Magnusem Warrenty Act. The only warrenty items that won't be covered is anything that is directly damaged by the new aftermarket part. What could you damage with a simple set of slip on's?

2. That might be true. The O2 sensors can adjust within a very narrow range. If you change a muffler set and an air cleaner, it may still run just fine. But if it runs lean and you have to do a remap, don't be surprised.

3. Start with the stage 1 download. If your mixture is off, it won't be off by much. An inexpensive download should get back where you need to be.

My opinion of the PCIII for the '06 Dyna's and all '07's is not good. They replace the O2 sensors with simulaters, and eliminate the closed loop operation. IMO, that's a real step backwards in technology. Once they figure out how to use the O2 sensors, it will most likely be an excellent option.

i really like the SE-2 slip on's. many others just to loud for my tastes. at this time,i really do not want to change my air cleaner.then you get in to having to get the hd download. my bike runs so good with this setup,i am a little scared to mess with the air cleaner, etc. it also depends how much money you want to spend, some pipes are quite pricey, like,350.00 to 400 !! but, yea, the stock pipes are just way to quiet . btw,my bike is a 2006,i do not know about the 07's . slip on's like i have can be had a under 200.00. i like pipes that are louder, but, not on my bike, the loudness grinds on mw after awhile. this is a topic where a lot of it is a matter of opinion, personal taste in other words . good luck.

You think that is expensive? Well, I paid $580 for the thunderheader and I probably would have paid more! Thanks

Expensive yes, but then again we do all own HD's, otherwise known as Hundreds of Dollars.
As far as the PCIII goes, well I will not really agree with the backwords in technology idea completely. HD is back far enough in tech. when it comes to the fuel injection if you ask me. I mean if you change exhaust and an air cleaner you have to go to them and get some ubber expesive download, everytime?! When I totally redid my Mustang (88 injected 5.0) I did not need to go to Ford for a remap. So it to me seems that HD is a bit behind in the fuely knowledge, I think they know how to fix it I just am not sure they want to loose this easy money. Just my 2 cents.
By the way, V&H shortshots are not what you want, they are loud, (i like it).

Lol.i hope this does not turn to a loud pipe debate .. i like loud, just not for me. i wish i would hit the lotta, till then, like many of us, we gotta watch budget. i must say tho,i do not buy the SE2'S ,because they were cheaper,i just the it is the right sound for me . i been down the road with louder pipes in the past, this is why i have some ear damage in one ear. most of that.belive it or not,is from wind noise, even with a helmat.a helmet offers really no protection against the wind noise. i wear ear plugs ofen these days when riding. trust me,it is not fun to have ringing in the ears from hearing damage. and it never goes away . just my opinion. the SE2'S are perfect for my tastes.

as a side note, if a new rider gets the wrong pipes, 99% of the time he can recover his/her money on e-bay,or on the board here .
btw,got in one awesome 100mile ride yeaterday. none today, go in for a deep cleaning on my teeth. doc give me lorazepam to chill me,he says,i would be lucky to sit on my bike without falling off.lmao.

oh,on my last bike (sportster),i had the clycle shacks, nice pipes, once again, just a tid bit to loud for me,although they did have a deeper rumble.

curious, how many other people have ringing in the ears from many years of bike riding. i been riding for about 34 years. i started early with a honda 50cc super sport. man,i thought it was fast <g> .............

[sm=confused06.gif]well the way I see It you have to figure on 3 major issues.
First, What do you want out of your pipes e.i. Performance, sound, looks, or D.all of the above.

Second, Price, how much are youwillingto spendon what you want. and not just on the pipes but filters fuel mapping dyno if needed all that good stuff.

And finally where do you live who are you gonna **** of with your new pipes.

now my personal opinion you can never go wrong with rineharts, but just about anything is gonna be better than SE slipons from HD there ok but you can do better for the money. just about any set of slipons with quiet baffles is still gonna give you that rumble without going "too loud".

2 into 1s are better for performance but have that love it or leave it look.
generally and I stress the word generally the longer the pipe the deeper the rumble.
Shorter pipes are good forthat "loud"your not looking for.

as for the download you need it cant hurt to get it,pc III is where I wouldspend my money its more expensive but worth it in the long run.hope I helped some
