Editbrain: I feel your pain as I also have a 2010 SB (bought in Feb) that after "stage 1" wanted cams for a little more umph! Not much more as like you I was concerned about longevitiy/reliability.

Spoke with my Indy who does all my work for me ($$$ so reasonable I would be hard pressed to do it myself cheaper) about cams.

Well I wound up walking out with a major upgrade (S&S 106/cams/headwork) and could not be any happier. 5400 miles on original motor (parts are sitting on my fireplace mantel).

If cams are what you want (morehp/tq) then, go for it. Just realize that just like all things HD, it becomes addictive!

I went with the SE204 cams as the dealer was having a 40% discount on all SE parts. It did provide the loping sound and a bit more low/mid range grunt so am happy with it. Also factor in cost of new gaskets and tuning it.

I have the SE software, and the SEST with Auto Tune. I looked, and there is a map for the 204s, Stage 1, with a 2-1 pipe.
Gonna search out to see if there is a speedometer issue with a 30t Pulley. I looked on Andrew's site, but could not find anything for a 2010 model.

If you have the SE software, I think that allows you to adjust the idle speed yourself ... (I don't have the software myself, but was thinking I'd seen someone post to that effect) ... If you want to hear your bike lope at idle, start by dropping your idle speed from 1050 RPM to 950 RPM ....

As far as the 204s having a deleterious effect on your engine life, I think of it this way ... these newer bikes are well engineered and tested ... I fully expect I will get upwards of 150,000 miles maybe 200,000 if I don't get a second or third bike and drop the amount I ride this one ....

If I need a 'top end' job at 80,000 miles, that's a good justification to replace stock with big bore cylinders and high flow heads ... if I need a 'bottom end' job, might be a good time to look into a stroker crank ... etc ....

If you think it is safe to adopt the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' mindset, you might ask yourself, 'why do the armed forces go to all the trouble of all the planned maintenance they do?' ... I don't have personal experience with the other services, but the Navy is constantly tearing apart perfectly good, working parts and assemblies to inspect and reassemble ... the key is to ensuring you have the manual and follow all the prescribed steps religiously ....

I say to 'go for it' ... you only live once ... you know you want to do it, what are you waiting for ...?

On the 204s, can increase the redline from 5500 to 6000 (I think). The PCIII allowed the reset.

I believe my redline is already past 5500. You all have valid points. Maintenance is done at service intervals. Not to the level of taking the engine apart, and inspecting. That is a good point, but I highly doubt that anyone go to that extent to get 100,000 miles from a motor.
I do want to do it. I have a 1000 mile ride coming in the end of Sept. I think I might drop the cash on HWY pegs and a new seat with a backrest, and get a handle bar bag for storage this go round. Have a planned trip with the daughter to see Mickey Mouse in Nov. So funds will be tight after I buy the stuff mentioned. Might ask for the parts for an Christmas gift from wife. Then have this job done in the winter.
