Just got dyno tuned
Next summer I do the top end to finish the 98" conversion. I could only afford the cams for now. Glad I didn't wait until I could afford it all
I bought the bearing puller and installer from Georges garage just because I wanted to be able to do it all myself and not take it to the dealer. Those were about $160.
The only thing I had to farm out was getting the cam bearings and cams pressed into the plate with the gears lined up. One of the service techs from local HD shop charged me $20 to do it..took maybe 10 minutes.
Having NEVER been inside a twin cam motor, if I were to do it again and had everything here, 3-4 hours. Take your time, get a service manual if you don't have one.
I called and talked to Vic (Sc-longhair) several times just for reassurance since he had done this not long ago
I did cams on my '07 and all in all I had about $500-600 invested including cams and dyno tune. I reused stock pushrods. Going to gear drive does increase cost as well but some say with gear drive you don't lose power but gain a little extra because of the positive interaction of the gears that have zero play vs chain that can stretch and cause slight power loss.
Congrats, Bryan.
