You all may call me stupid, but what the hell is a blown cam? Is it just worn down beyond specifications?

If the OP is saying verbatim what that dealerships service techs are saying I would be deeply concerned about them working on said bike. He said his "risers" are bad and his cams are "blown". Maybe that is the new MMI lingo. I'b be deathly afraid to say "carb" in that shop. What shop would have the cams/lifters covered? Does this mean warrantied or they know how to fix it? Scaryyyyy...

to clear things up. im aware my lingos off, what i put is what the receptionist told me over the phone i have yet to talk to the actual tech and find out the details of what was wrong exactally. and what turned out to be a cam problem they are fixing out of kindness. i purchased the bike used from them without a warrenty. if they really wanted to they could charge me to fix something i just got. ill post what the exact problem was once i speak to the tech that worked on it.

If everything you say is wrong and the dealer will fix on their dime, I wouldn't venture to far from that dealership (like going elsewhere). They may be trying to right some previous wrongs. Good luck with your ride.

Around 2000 and 2001 a lot of Harley cams were not made correctly and many were failing.

This was written by a friend around that time:

"The fourth problem (that Harley has never admitted to) was the soft cam issue. Camshafts with as little as 200 miles were showing a wear problem that looked like someone took a lathe to the cam lobes (I did an article on the problem for "Biker's Rag" magazine). The problem wasn't with the hardness of the cam but with the material they were making the cams out of. It was too soft. Not too long ago I was told that the Motor Company has changed the material that they use to cast their cams with now."

I had this problem with my 2001 TC88 cams at under 20K.

Of course a bad lifter roller bearing will waste a cam in no time.
