I am just waiting to happen to my bike, 06 with 28k miles,

Maybe a dumb question, Will a dab of JB weld or spot tigwelding each bolt to pulley hold them in place?

Great idea, I just put on new rear tire and replaced pulley bolts with new Harley ones and added locktite to be sure.

Curious was this the stock bolts and pulley? I know there are a few places on ebay selling new pulleys with bolts that are too damn short. The bolts have to be at least 2.25" and Grade 5 or they will not hold. I do not believe it is a design flaw, we just hear about all the squeaky wheels. This is the point on the bike that takes all the torque, if not done properly it will break.

When this happened on mine I did not replace the wheel. just tapped the threads and used 2.5" Grade 5 bolts, been in there for over 10k and no issues. My bolts actually ripped out of the wheel because the indy that installed the pulley used bolts that were only 1.75" and that does not give the bolts enough leverage to hold under that kind of torque.

It is not just dynas, softails have the same problem. As Drew said it is all year models.
People reuse the bolts, or the try to re-torque them during a service. They only need to be visually checked.
I would not reuse the wheel. It looks like a stock wheel, buy a used one off ebay, and get new bolts for both the pulley and rotor.
When you install the both follow the directions in the package, and do not go back to recheck the torque after the loctite has dried. Use a sharpy, put a small dot on the pulley/wheel for a reference when checking them.

Yep, my guess is many if not all of these failures are due to reusing the bolts - they are ONE TIME USE!

What is in question is the hardware that Harley uses. There grade 5 bolts are in question. I took several grade 5 bolts and tested the hardness to spec. out of a dozen only two were with in spec. IMHO I would swap them out for a grade 8. Bolts should be engaged 3 X's the diameter. So if they are 1/2 bolts they should be engaged 1-1/2 deep. And always use the red locktite on any fastners that are replaced...

edited for a mistake Sorry about the math. You are correct 8541HOG.

I think your math is a bit fuzzy there....
3x1/2" would be 1-1/2" not 3/4"... 3/4" is no where near enough for these bolts. Also the bolts, at least on mine, are 7/16" not 1/2"

Is this just happening with stock wheels/pulleys or with aftermarket wheels as well? Just wondering if there is some stronger stuff I can get when I get new wheels. I plan on a WG front end with a 21" front and a rear to match.

Sorry about the math. I corrected it. Was using a 1/2" as a example. If they are 7/16 then 1-5/16 engagement of threads.
