I agree the early downshift is probably what caused the OP's belt to snap, or was a contributing factor. I agree downshifting to slow the bike down is a bad idea...
Yeah and the cruise drive tranny is still a new transmission for Harley...
But then the 2000 has the old 5 speed... soooo
All the new CD trannies have all helical cut gears but I like that 1st and 5th in mine still have the spur cut, nice and noisy adding to the grunt factor!:-)
Probably broke because you didn't convert to a chain. Just kidding, but since I did convert my '00 FXDL a couple years ago I have a mint condition belt I'd be happy to give you. PM me if you're interested.

So me and a few buddies were taking a little ride this evening and all of a sudden while down shifting my belt broke on my 00 super glide (owned it for 3 months). As far as I know, no problems with the bike and I havent had one since Ive been riding it.
We were going about 25-30mph slowing down to a stop light, and to anticipate the stop i started to down shift. When i was going from second to first it kind of got a little tight and made a popping noise between 2nd and neutral, the popping was kind of like the gears in the transmission werent really engaging and just bouncing off each other. So i gave it an extra bump to get it into 1st and all of a sudden the belt snapped right off.
Luckily i was able to pull of to a side street and 3 of my buddies stayed with me while the other 2 rode back and got a trailer.
But the question is, what happened? Did the transmission seize and forced the belt to snap off? My buddy said sometimes he doesnt even bother to put his bike into first until hes at a dead stop because his transmission wont let him. The belt looked fairly new and even had the HD symbol visible on it. After I change the belt should I inspect the bike further?
Thanks
9 out of 10 times belts break because they are old and need replaced... however, if it's a newer belt then 9 out of 10 times they break because they are too loose.. not too tight or any other reason.
Not sure why this was resurrected, without a question being asked. I'll throw in there, guys who go through belts, sometimes act stupid. This guy the belt was 11 years old maybe.
5 speed was the wider belt, which in my small sample size did better than newer narrower belt. But lots of variables.
