on another note- earlier on in this thread i spoke about powdercoating it so it blended in better. somone said that it may not be a good idea because it would hold the heat in and may cause the o rings to fail. well i took my bike to the track and gave the steering damper a real good workout, it was barley even warm to the touch little lone hot enough to make an o ring fail....so im gonna say that powdercoating is just fine.
edit, loner 888 reading back it was your buddy that said not to paint it cause it would hold in heat? Does yours get hot while riding? maybe the different metals holf/transfer the heat better/worse but mine doesnt get hot :S
Naw, mine don't get that warm either; at least not on the outside. Don't know if heat could make seals fail or if issue is fluid warming up and thinning out enuff to start passing the seals. Could be totally unrelated, but I did paint my old one a few weeks before it puked on me, though, despite my bud's scolding (little brake cleaner took off paint before I sent it back for replacement). And I see that Shindy claims a new oval body design on their damper helps to control heat build-up, so heat inside the damper could be an issue. Maybe just hype, but I'm not an engineer, so going to play it safe this time. I like the boot idea, sounds great, but wonder why the expensive Storz-Cerrani unit don't come with boots? ( that puppy is like 300 or 400 bucks I think, Big Daddy would know, he's running one.Wouldn't cost more than a few dimes to put boots on 'em in production run). Anyways, really am interested to see how it works out in the long run.
Lol funny u say that,I'm an engineer, and still don't know how the fluid inside would hold heat and not transfer it to the metal casing unless it's build with STRICT tempature tolerances. Hummm, I'm gonna paint it and boot it, worst case I will re-build it and strip the paint off.
Lots of things that should have a boot on them don't, like your front forks and Hydrolic cylinder, dust is more often than not the reason seals fail, at least in heavy equipment applications.
