I like my Fat Bob and bought it specifically for the type of riding I had planned on doing. Trouble is almost for the get go I found myself doing and enjoying longer rides again. To this end I have begun morphing it into a Fat Glide. I love the nimbleness of the Dyna frame and how quick it handles. The engine mods have really refined the ride. I would trade it for a Road Glide however I would want to do the precise engine mods to it as well.
Doing the upgrades to the Fat Bob have been fairly easy except for the electrics. The late model FXDF is not the easiest wiring harness to modify.
Bob
my first harley was a dyna super glide. loved that bike. eventually stepped up to a street glide. it was okay. good looking and comfy. not as fun to ride as the dyna. after a crash with a deer the glide was gone and i picked up another dyna but a street bob this time. i have it all set up with bags and stuff so touring is great on it.
i wouldn't go back unless i could afford both. my dyna is a great all round bike.
I'm not trying to offend anybody. If I wanted a ride that had a huge windshield, enough baggage to carry a month's worth of crap, built in cd player, and a seat warmer, I'd buy a car. I'll keep my motorcycle looking like a motorcycle and make it work for whatever trip I plan.
My wife was pissed when I got rid of my last bike, which surprised me. She didn't ride with me too much but was still upset. But, fortunately for me, she said that when I get a new bike, it needed to be big & comfortable enough for her to ride with me. So, 4+ years later, I just brought home a '07 Ultra Classic. Can't ride it yet (too cold here in MN) but she had a pretty big smile on her face as I pulled the bike into the garage. So, to keep the peace and keep her happy, I went the touring route. I'm sure I'll be on it more than the wife, but that's ok as I got "my" bike back. As they say "If momma ain't happy, no one is happy..." Rings true in this house!
I love my Dyna, but after going to demo days this fall I could see owning a touring bike in my future, but not at the expense of my Dyna.
I thought at the time I could see trading to a touring bike, but the more I thought about it this winter the more I realized why I bought my FXDC in the first place....the Dynas are just a blast to ride and good all around bike for just about anything.
Some day I would like to have a touring bike as a second bike, but then again my wife wants her own bike, so that's more likely going to be the case...I will end up buying the wife a bike, and I will set them both up to carry some **** when the time comes so we can tour together. She's not into the touring bikes, and prefers the more stripped down, blacked out look (she wants a Softail Slim or a Fat Bob).
Right now with 3 young kids, long distance touring in not in our immediate future, but someday it will be a reality & I imagine that will be with her on her own bike & me on my Dyna. Only time will tell how it unfolds, but I plan on keeping my Dyna.
No, my wife refuses to get on the bike with me so I do not plan on getting one. I do plan on moving up from my Sporty though. Thinking about a Fatboy or Softtail.
