Is it really just that? How much of a performance decrease are we talking
I'm not overly fussed about eeking out every last ounce of power from the bike, most of my mods are for looks rather than performance ... I only got the FP3 so i could put a big sucker on the bike
I was thinking of adding quiet baffles anyway, just to lower the tone, I believe they will help with the back pressure too
The bike will run fine with short shots. I didn't notice any power loss when I put the short shots on and the bike still had some get up and go. I now have the BCT baffle and it does seem to run smoother and pulls longer through the RPM band. My bike use to have a very distinctive plateau you could feel around 4200 RPM. I don't have a tach, so thats my RPM guess based on dyne sheets I've seen for stock 96's. Now it seems to pull through that and I don't feel the plateau anymore. The quiet baffles are not going to quiet the bike down at all (from vance and hines). Niether will the BCT quiet baffles (sound like crap IMO). I would recommend just run the stock baffles and spend a couple bucks at home depot and do what in the thread below. I wish I though of this before spending $80 on BCT's. If you like the looks of the SS go for it, there's still plenty of power. I don't plan on switching anytime soon unless I come across a killer deal on a T-header.
Short shot sounds and looks good, the reason I replaced it with a BSS is strictly performance. BSS definitely has better acceleration. I actually like both Short shot and Big shot, they are the only exhausts I would ever install on my dyna.
I have the Short Shots on my 2003 Deuce and I am very happy with them. I went from the Big Radius 2n2 to the Short Shots and believe it or not they are quieter than the 2n2. I have the stock baffles in them. I have heard all of the stories about how the SS sacrifice HP but I'm not one of those HP freaks anyway.
I have only had them on for anout three weeks but so far I am extremely happy with them.
If short shots are too loud, the solution is a combination of the quiet baffles and the hard kore baffles installed at the rear of the pipe. I did this on my bike and while I prefer the deep idle sound of the quiet baffles alone, adding the hard kore baffles really took the loudness out of the exhaust.
Maybe my SS are an anomaly, but I had the V&H Big Radius 2n2 on my 2003 Deuce with stock baffles and I switched to the V&H SS with stock baffles and the SS were measurably quieter. Before I bought them I called and asked a tech at J&P and he stated they would be about the same, but they were, surprisingly, quieter.
People bash these pipes simply because they are one of the least expensive out there. But most people start out with them .. go figure. Then they upgrade and the hate comes out.
Most members on forums all over the net live by two simple rules ...
1 if its on there bike, truck ect its the best
2 if its the most expensive its the best
Sad really if you thank about it. OP get what you like no mater what the cost. I ditched 2 sets of pipes for the short shots simply for the sound and look. I wont change them as I am 100% happy
+1 on what he said. I have them simply for the looks. If I wanted sport bike performance I would've kept my sport bike.......kinda wish I still had it
I prefer the short shots over the new 2-1 style exhaust. When I changed mine out, I noticed my gas mileage wasn't as good, but it was so small of a change it was hard to notice.
For performance, I seriously did not notice a change at all.
As for volume, well I like loud pipes, for some that's a problem but I don't live around a lot of people, and in reality, I didn't buy a Harley so I could get rice burner performance or sound like a Goldwing.
I understand why people like the 2-1 and I respect that, but I just don't like the look or the sound.......
