Had the SS's on mine for years. I think they are great exhaust. Would still have them if I didn't find a great deal on the only 2-1 I like the looks of.
First I'll tell you that I personally can't stand the look or sound of the short shots, or any v&h 2-2 other than maybe old straight shots, so this is unbiased fact: They're fine. Typical v&h quality and finish, super easy install, and the performance is nowhere near as bad as people on here seem to think. They make decent power on a stage 1 with a good tune and they're not terrible with motor work either, especially if you're not looking for every last hp. The quiet baffles make the sound much better imo.
Most peeps here hate them because they magically make your bike slower than stock and hurt their ears. However, most 2-1 pipes look like butt cheese and the peeps who spent upwards of $1k for them will never admit that.
Dont worry about a few ft lbs of torque. Your bike gotta look good too. My bike gets me whereever I gotta go with plenty of speed and looks good when I get there.
I have a 2014 103ci. I'm using a Thundermax ECM with my SS and a PM MaxHP A/C....and I get 40+MPG with plenty of low end torque....and bad *** look AND sound. Not may pipes out there can say they have a great look AND a great sound AND perform well too! In most cases, you have to pick one.
Side note: If you go with the Thundermax tuner and the SS, you will need to have the stock bung locations on the pipes closed and new bungs welded and tapped to receive the larger "Smart" broadband O2 sensors. More cost...but WELL woth it IMHO!!!
The BONUS of having the Thundermax, with autotune, is NEVER needing to spend the money to have your bike dyno'd....even if you upgrade to stage II or III....ect...

Reason: sp
Those that claim less gas milage is that because most people that add pipes also add an air cleaner and a fuel management?? My bet is the fuel management tune is whats killing milage being they are mostly running richer. I had straight shot slip ons without a tuner or ac, but same straight through exhaust/baffle as the SS. Got 50 mpg pure highway 40-48mph city or mixed. Put an air cleaner on and a PCV and my city milage dropped the most mainly because of the tune I'm sure, but I still pulled 50mpg highway. Switched to the short shots with the same tune and guess what still 50 mph highway. If any exhaust killed milage it was the crappy screaming eagle slip ons that came on my bike. I couldn't get the bike past 48 mpg.
I think the consensus seems to be if I really want to eek out the power of my bike I should look elsewhere
For me power is less important than the looks and I really think they look great on the bikes on here! .. since I lowered mine my straight shots don't run parallel to the swing arm and that really stands out for me .. also since its chopped they just look a little too long!!
I reckon I will take the plunge, as soon as I get sign off from the bank account and wife
did I read correctly, I can use the quiet baffles from my straight shots in the short shots? that would save me a few quid if so
Have V&H Shortshots on my 04 1200 sporty. Have been on the bike since I got it, loud yes but they dont bother me at all. They dont seem obnoxious, maybe they are off the bike but not sure. Pretty damn loud at idle, after all they basically are just header pipes, loud when your romp on it, but not bad at cruising rpm. Bike runs great with them and a hypercharger.
