A More Efficient Voltage Regulator.
I need some help please.
I just purchased a voltage regulator for an air-cooled VW that is fitted with a three-phase permanent magnet alternator. The engine was originally fitted with a "Voltage Regulator Rectifier For Harley Dyna 04-05 Fatboy 01-06 74610-01 74540-01". That regulator failed. I have been told that there are more efficient regulators (sometimes referred to as PWM regulators) that totally disconnect from the stator when the battery is fully charged.
Questions: Is it true that a more efficient regulator is available to replace the "Voltage Regulator Rectifier For Harley Dyna 04-05 Fatboy 01-06 74610-01 74540-01"? If so, can someone please provide a link to, or a part number for, such a regulator?
Thanks for Your Time,
Wes

I have used VW regulators, from air cooled bugs, in the past when a Harley regulator was not available. But not on a twin 1999 or newer bike.

if you cannot find an hd one, try searching for wind driven systems, will not be small package since most are panel mount
40 amp unit
most units are mosfet now days away from the transistor and scr units. the advantage of the PWM is that they match the out put to the load, not simple on/off so they run cooler and hold a tight reign on the system.

The VR appears to have come from a Harley Davidson Softail Fat Boy. Ref: Drag Specialties Solid State Regulator For Harley Softail 2001-2006 | JPCycles.com.
I thought maybe you guys would know if there was a MOSFET equivalent for this regulator.
I'm developing an ECU for the engine. I would like to use the output of the "alternator" as a backup for the crank trigger. But ..., I have to know how all regulators effect the alternator output so I would like to test all varieties.
