At 21 flats, preload is about .110"; I would expect some noise at that pre load. At 24 flats, preload will be about .125" which might quiet things down. At 26-28 flats, valve train should be quiet. You can try 24 flats and if valve train is noisy, more preload may help.

Stupid question? Does it make anydifference if I do this with the engine warm or cold?

Readjusted last night with 27 flats still seems noisy. Maybe I am hearing something else. But it only seems to be noisy when the motor is under load. I cant hear anything at an idle.

My all bore 107" motor makes plenty of noise on a cold start; however, when the motor is up to operating temps, quiet. Take a ride, like 50 miles or so and see how she sounds when everything is up to operating temps.

I guess it could be detonation but it doesnt really sound like it. But I will check my plugs to see.
