Jim, visit the H-D website and the Owners tab, where you can enter your VIN and get it's original build spec. Why do you want to know what the engine is - do you actually own the bike? If so your owners manual will tell ya! You can also check the model details already given above by checking an on-line parts website. That model is also probably still shown on the H-D wesbsite.
I also need to know how to get more information about engine numbers, mostly in case of registering the turd I just bought.
It has engine numbers, is from a 2005 Softail, and is in an Ultima frame. I don't believe I can get a title or register it without paperwork from the engine. Its certainly not worth swapping out engine case for an aftermarket one.

The abbreviated VIN (engine number) is stamped on the left side of the engine. What are those characters?
