Add another vote for lifters here. If the lifter is leaking down excessively, it will come and go as it pumps up/leaks down. I would be willing to bet that the noise returns as the engine heats up and the oil thins out.

Another vote for sticking lifter. If it has the later tensioners, it could be a sticky tensioner.

As shown it's not a screamin' beagle motor. It has SE heads. Other than that there could be anything in the motor. Maybe a set off Wood's or Jim's lifters?

i didnt see it was intermitant problem,so inner bearing most likely not,so ill agree its proably a sticking lifter,but we did have a bike come in once that made a clacking noise that went way & it turned out to be a bad roller (im sure the noise would have come back big time if the guy continued to ride it)
