Default Carb Cough or Misfire

Ok guys I have a '91 Softail with a CV carb, running a 46 pilot and 185 main jet. The carb was rebuilt last year and the accelerator pump diaphragm replaced. New plug wires. Also has a Big Sucker Stage I air cleaner and I believe the slip ons were swapped out before I got it since it's louder than stock.

If I'm running at a steady speed say 50mph, let off of it and then go to roll on the throttle I am getting a momentary pop almost like a miss, but also sounds like it coming from the carb. Also happens when I slow down and then go to get back on it.

Also with the temps dropping it is harder to start than normal.

Any thoughts on carb issue or ignition?

Thanks,
Tony

Popping usually indicates a lean condition in the carb. I wouldn't suspect the ignition based on those symptoms, just yet. You might twist the idle mixture open a bit and see what happens. The air cleaner is letting in a ton of fresh air so you'll need plenty of fuel to avoid a lean condition. Look at your plugs and seee what they indicate.

Weather been colder than normal lately down there? I know that will bring on, or exacerbate a trailing throttle misfire. I think falcon is on the right track here. Your jetting should be in the ballpark (what I was running when I had the CV), so try richening the idle mixture, or possibly a 48 pilot jet.

Also, is your accelerator pump working properly?

Thanks guys I'll open up the idle mixture screw some. When we rolled out of here Sunday morning it was 42 and when we got back in Sunday afternoon it was 58. Right now 32...tonight 19.

In the pics the plug on the left is from the front cylinder.

In addition to the mixture screw and the jet, I'd put a shim under the needle clip...

Thanks. It already has the upgraded CVP Performance Velocity Needle, which according to their site is supposed to alleviate the need for shims and clips.

Plugs look OK as far as mixture goes, But they look like they need gapping. Should be .038 to .040.

The way I do it is .038 will pass through the gap and .040 won't or barely will.

BTW: I picked out the front plug from back without even reading your caption. Front should run on lean side and rear plug should run on rich side. It is the nature of the beast. No one knows why for sure, many theories.

I'd adjust the accelerator pump one notch and see what happens, but really sounds like the engine is running OK.

Just my $0.02

Thanks I'll check it out.
Does the needle have multiple clip slots (like an adjustable Dynojet needle)? Id be surprised if it didn't. Needle adjustment affects the range you're looking at....
