Well, I thought it was just a nut under there, but I just looked at it, and I don't see how you get it out either! I guess you're supposed to replace the whole door! I carry a hand full of bic type lighters in the trunk, if someone needs a light, I just give them one. I think my lighter works, but I quit smoking in '88 so I don't use it. It does charge my phone if I need it.

EDIT: If I really wanted to get it out of there, I would probably try whacking it from the bottom, all I can think of is glue holding it in there. The flange on top is stopping it from going, so it's got to come up.

I believe that the outer cover (the part visible inside the fairing) unscrews from the inner part. The inner part gets inserted into the hole in the fairing and the outer part the screws onto it to hold it in place. If the pictures are visible you can see the threaded area of the lighter scocket.

^^^^ That's got to be it. I tried mine, the bottom wouldn't move independent of the top, but it's 27 years old and I didn't try very hard.

I actually bought one to install on my 1991, and it does have the rear housing that unscrews from the head unit. The rear housing acts like a nut that screws to the body of the power head unit. I remember looking at it when I received it and wondered wtf? Gave it a turn and whalla! Yours may be the same?

Mine didn't come with one stock. That's why I bought and referred to installing one. Only thing I have for reference. The mfg is Show Chrome, here's a link to the one I bought if interested. I like the low profile and weather proof cover. What looks like the "Body" of it actually unscrews and gets removed. Feed wires through fairing and screw it back on.
