I'm going to Syn for the first time ever this year and as soon as I'm done putting the motor all back together i will post a new thread in here... I want to try and record the difference between oil temps at various outdoor temps and conditions... I don't think it's all that bad as some say.. we'll see..

When you do the cam, pop in a new set of lifters too. You’re welcome.

In a stock EVO motor you will find that running syn (in my case it was Amsoil 20-50) will drop oil temp about 10°F.

What it will do in that thing you have who knows????

Tech question: I ordered the service manual (new in wrap!) from an eBay seller, but it wont be here until Wed. As the bike arrives tomorrow, I planned on getting all three fluids changed before I get registered on Mon and then bring it to the shop for tires and brake fluid flush (I haven’t messed with brakes yet). Anyway, a few things.

Can someone provide the torque value (and pattern if there is one) for the derby cover?

Also, my understanding is there is a drain tube under the left cover. Simply unplug it and drain? I saw some videos about flushing the oil left in the motor by running with the filter off for a quart or so. While that freaked me out, it makes sense as the oil coming out is the return to the tank. Is that something usually done?

Lastly (for now...) is is recommend flushing the oil tank with kerosene? Bike has 17k miles.

Also open to any fluid related suggestions!

I plan on using Redline. If gaskets weep, then they’ll get changed I suppose...

Derby bolts: I use a T-handle Allen wrench, and just turn them until the shaft on the wrench starts to twist. Call it wrist tight. Doesn't take much. It's not a mechanically critical fastener.

Oil drain: Yes, FXRs have a tube that is clamped to the frame, left side, under the triangle cover.

Flush oil: I've done that a couple of times. If it makes you feel better, it won't hurt anything. Probably a waste if time and a oil, but none of this is about not wasting time and money anyway.

Kerosene flush: Wouldn't go there unless you find that there is a serious gunk problem in the tank. Odds are the tank is fine.

Excellent, tyvm. Heading to the dealer now for the gasket, I-rings, filter and a pair of plugs.

I forgot to ask- plug gap?

Again, thanks!

We’ll talk carb jets next!

With todays high detergent oils... Shopuldn't need any flushing at all!
I don't worry about running the engine to purge it ... but... only change/check/add Oil to a Hot, just been run engine... being a Dry sump system... that is the Way!
