They make an adapter to bolt to the S&S and use a stock OEM air cleaner. I found it when I did the EFI on the Sporty, but I wanted to go the other way, stock HD intake to S&S air cleaner. That's a lot harder and I wound up making my own from the top of a Toyota 22R piston.
I used an old aluminum sign, cut it to shape, marked the two front holes that receive teardrop cover, make sure to have the filter on when laying out holes, then put stock air cleaner where I wanted it to sit and marked center hole and drilled(remove bracket before drilling) I then stuck a bolt through bracket with a couple of lock washers to keep the bolt from falling out while mounting or removing cover. My big cubed engine has a R1 which is a G, haven't had 1 problem with street manors or runability after getting it set years ago, I do run a T Jet in it because it spreads out the cross overs with jetting. Since a S&S style set up can deliver performance and street manors in a big cube 650 lift cam engine, can't say nothing negative about it.
Run a S&S backing plate that accepts a Evo round filter and cover, can't find the part number for it but Lowriderharold had the S&S backing plate assembly for sale at one time.
On the 89" ran a modded CV and Mikuni 45, used Yost products in the carbs. Both carbs got the job done but the Mikuni had a slight edge because it's throttle response was just a tad better over the CV diaphram. Still didn't see anything negative in runability with either carbs, didn't head towards a S&S because the Mikuni got the job done.

Still have the set-up out in the man-cave & bought it from Zippers years ago. Don't know if they still sell em.
I also made a backing plate for a S & S carb, but with the old style 6 in. cover & a K & N filter.
I modeled off the Zipper set-up to make the smaller one.
I just made the smaller unit for cosmetics.
I like the looks of the older & smaller air cleaners but don't believe it would do well on a hopped up evo as I just had it on my bone stock lowrider with just a S&S carb & Cycle Shack staggered duals,
but it worked fine being stock.
They use to be a guy on e-bay who sold directions & a few parts that you could cut the S&S backing plate & with the few parts he provided , made it adapt to a round cover.
I'll check & see if I can find him.

I got a 1980 thousand CC custom Sportster. I've been running a super E for some time. It can be tuned and make an old bike run like a drag bike. Since every bike is different one has to learn some tricks. The manual tells you what kind of exhaust pipes work best. For my old bike the right sized drag pipes work fine. I just added mni baffles to get some back pressure. The accelerator pump lets the engine rev up real quickly. The bowl has a vent plug and I tried taking it out. That made me learn you do that if you have a large engine. Custom shops advised me that my bike needs it. Putting it back in made a big difference. It runs a lot better.

Can you use a big sucker and stock air cleaner cover with the S&S Super E or do you have to use the tear drop?
No, you'd probably need some kind of big ugly adapter. The S&S teardrop is one of the most efficient air cleaner designs ever. No need to use something else.
