THANKS GUYS, think I have it sorted now.

while I have all the parts apart, what is the best solvent to use in cleaning everything up before reassembly? Degreaser? Brake cleaner?

I generally use brake cleaner.

Yeh brake cleaner will get it all nice again. Just wipe it all off before assembly. Have fun.
