Default Primary chain shoe questions

Hey, just reassembling my late 84 (evo) FXRS.
2 questions about my primary chain adjustment shoe:
How do you know when it needs replacing?
- (Although if I need to ask, I should just replace it right?) There's three grooves worn into it.
The deepest being the center, which is maybe 1/16" deep.

Does it matter if the tallest/thickest end is facing right or left?

My service manual (not haynes or clymer) didn't mention anything.
Thanks in advance.

A 1/16th is nothing, wide side right.

I've got a Hyden sitting on the shelf ready to install when or if my stator goes.

For you hayden fanboies you really need to run a bike with one in it and an open primary so you actually see how little that cutsy gizmo does, they are junk the chain is all over the place unless you pack in the shims to bottom out the spring and then the chains running too tight at low speeds not to mention I have personaly repaired a few of those that spit the aluminium adustment shims that got chewed up in the process. Been several threads in here over the years about that issues.

I replaced my OEM pad at around 80K miles with 1/8" deepest groove, and also a crack at one of the mounting bolt holes, so I got some real good use out of it. I think the one I bought was very similar to it off the internet. Could have picked one up from H-D for cheap also, but didn't think about it.

Anyway, so inspect the pad for any cracks before you put it back in. If you decide to replace it, keep the old one as a cheapo primary locking tool for the road.

The original primary chain adjuster shoe in my `89 FLSTC came out at 115,000 miles. I changed it just because I had a new one on hand. The old one looked like it would go a lot longer.

Not a fan of automatic adjusters on these bikes, I`m convinced that they are unnecessary. It`s not like you are in there adjusting all the time...

Now.... if someone would come out with a manual adjuster for the Rushmore and M8 Primaries, and outer covers with inspection openings, sign me up...
