Success!!! I had a small window for a run last night. The sun was low and blinding so I only did a few miles. Got the rpms up several times and didn't feel what I was experiencing before. Fender repair is done and waiting for paint. Hope to get it this week or next. They also added some reinforcing that should help prevent future cracking. I'll get some pictures once I get it back.
I'm a happy camper right now. Thank you everyone for the help and advice!
So what did they find? What was the fix? Your excessive vibration was just a stretched primary chain?
I didn't take it to a shop. I replaced parts myself as suggested by others in this thread. New chain, compensator sprocket, and compensator sprocket spacers. I don't know if it could have just been the chain or a combination of all 3. The chain had a pretty drastic angle. I couldn't see any difference between the old/new comp sprocket but someone mentioned the springs can go bad. They're enclosed in the cover so I don't know how I could verify. The sprocket spacer was definitely incorrect. It fit decent over the engine output shaft (?) but with the mass of that spacer if it was off center even slightly I'm sure that could have been adding to the issue.
Side by side to show the angle and amount of shims for new vs old chain.
Chain finally arrived late last week and I was able to get everything in last night. Busy week but I hope to be able to ride and report by this weekend.
New chain is shorter but not as much as I had expected.
Old compensator spacer on the left. New spacers on the right. Chain was properly aligned prior to removal but I wonder if this big *** spacer could have been a factor in the vibration?
Looks much better! Old chain had 6 spacers new one has 2. I've got to test ride sooner than later. The anticipation is killing me.
Actually the big azz washer is correct. They used them up thru '90 against the alternator rotor along with thin, smaller OD shims for the chain alignment. OEM# 29960-85
Lay your old chain on the table as it would be running and bow the center away from the ends. Measure to the center of the bow from a straight line with the ends and you'll feel better about the new chain.

Good job, glad you got everything sorted out.
Well that sucks... It doesn't show that spacer on the sprocket diagram in the primary section I was working off of. I do see it now on the alternator diagram. I'm really tempted to run it as is for the summer... but I know parts are there for a reason. I guess I'm pulling everything back out again?

Oh no, don't give it another thought... unless you enter it in a bike show that I'm judging.
If you look, you'll see after '90 they went back to 70's style, thick and smaller OD just like the one behind the rotor and like the ones you have pictured. I shouldn't have even brought it up but wanted you to know the big washer was correct "by the book" for your year model.

Awesome! I'm back to being a happy camper again! I have a hand full of little items I still need to address but all are minor evening/weekend issues that don't currently prevent me from riding. This is my 4th summer with the bike and it will be my first to actually put some miles on it. I did quite a bit over the winter and I'm really ready to ride!
I watched a video of a guy saying if you shake the compensator in your hand you should NOT hear anything. If you hear something rattle that means the springs are bad.
FWIW.
Glad your back on the road. Hope you have a safe ride.
