As I said early on, these pumps and drive are normally very reliable. They've been using the same basic design for 40+ years. If what I suspect has happened, the engine will be coming out anyway so doing the "cheat" way to get the cover off would probably be good a way as any.
Everything undone for the nose cone to come off, although I don't have the special tool.......I've read it can be done with a slide puller?

Can you let me know your 'cheat' method, or shall I take the tanks and top end off. (when convenient.....I know we're on different time zones....and you have other things to do)

This is where I'm at:

Time to pull the nosecone and check the oil drive gear, they're plastic and sometimes break.

My special tool for getting in there is... The Bolt Cutter. Go back in with S&S or other quality name "easy" adjustable pushrods. Some people manage to get in there by finding the sweet spot where all valves are closed, so all lifters are down and there should be no valve spring pressure on the pushrods. Either way, you don't have to pull the top off. The only other "special tool" you need is to get the inner cam bearing out, if you're going to do that "while you're in there" and if that's an issue.

As suggested a long time ago.... And post up a pic..

Also don't think that ignition is stock.. Who knows what else is in there...

I have popped the cam cover off without removing the pushrods and it was a little tight getting back on but it went on good.. With the Key way on the cam for the timing cup at 4 o'clock on a stock cam tells me that all the lifters will be very close to the base circles of the cam as shown in the following pics of an N grind stock cam.. I also noticed finally that the oil pump just had a chrome cover on it, it was hard to tell in the original pic you posted...

STOP!!!!!!! Put at least 3 bolts back into the cam cover. Put all the bolts back into the tappet guides and snug them alternately.

I admire you industriousness, but you've gotten way ahead of yourself.

You don't need a puller for the cam cover. Nice to have, but totally unnecessary.

The cheat involves getting the engine (cam) rotated to a specific position. As many have instructed, you need to remove the locks for the push rod covers and collapse the cover tubes. Then you will know if by chance it has adjustable push rods and that has to be done regardless.

Get the push rod covers collapsed. If there is no adjusters on the rods, just go ahead and pull the valve covers. Then, whichever the both rods on a particular cylinder can be rotated easily, remove that rocker assembly first. Remove the 5, 1/4" bolts (2 are socket heads, 3 are cap screws) first. Then the 4, 5/16" bolts. loosen them alternately. After that on is off, rotate the engine until both push rods are free to rotate on the other cylinder and remove that rocker assembly.

Then you can remove the screws from the cam cover and pull it off. A wide, thin putty knife and gentle tapping between the cover and case will break it loose from the gasket.

Yeah didn't see the pics you posted later and panicked when I saw his tappet guide bolts removed. Had no idea the OP was so eager to get to wrenching

AND, didn't notice earlier, looks like he has the cam at the correct position to go ahead and cheat it off. I'm guessing Compufire ignition, but that's of no consequence.

Yeah no problem I posted the pics later then when you read the post.. As for the ignition I only mentioned that because the PO obviously did some work.. So maybe it ain't all stock..
