Thanks for the reply pgreer. So I've taken snippets of photographs showing the Cam cover side of S&S, Revtech and Ultima which are clearly different from Harley. These pics may not all be of evo replacements but it does show their style cam cover. Interesting that the Custom cam cover most closely resembles the Harley cover of all of them. Now, I have heard that the patents Harley has on the evo were not very strong or complete which supposedly made copying engine features/parts quite easy. I'm no expert so don't quote me on that, but that is what I saw in my research.

Just comparing the cam covers of all 5 engines here the most similar to harley is the engine in the custom bike.

S&S .................................................. .................................................. ........................... RevTech........................................... ...

Ultima .................................................. .................................................. ......................... Harley...................................

Custom Bike engine

The pic on the left is interesting. It appears to have a heat shield... between the case and jugs ? ? ?

Does anyone know of any other manufacturers of aftermarket "crate" non-harly replacement motor besides these.

Lots of aftermarket cam covers that look just like the original, but are not of the same quality. So I'm not sure that helps much unless markings that identify the manufacturer are shown. Some of those markings may be on the inside, but the VIN you have leaves a few questions.

I said exactly what I meant to say...

The OP made it clear which bearings he was talking about in his first post.

OP: If your engine is an Evo type engine, it has Tapered Rollers aka Timken bearings on the left side of the crankshaft, just like I said in post #10 (before the nitpicking started).

Bottom pic is special build tag on the frame..... and above engine number on front (forward side) engine cases. Stamped twice - one on each case half.

I'm lost. I can't figure out who made this friggen engine! big bummer. The number comes up no where on the web. crazy If anyone wants a Sherlock challenge, I challenge you to find out who made this engine.

The cases look raised deck. Fins look wider. Are you sure it's only 80 CI? Might be a Revtech 100 or 110..

We call them taper roller bearings here...and a spade a spade

The assigned VIN tag means not a Harley frame, or some other likewise issue. The number stamped on both sides of the front of the case means not Harley cases. So, not a Harley-Davidson crate Evo motor. Not necessarily bad, but know what you're buying.

S&S gave me the answer immediately. They said the motor is an Ultima. Anyone know what kind of quality Ultima built motors have? ?

I have no personal Ultima experience. However, if you search the site here, you will find a lot of it. It seems to run: Not as good as an S&S. May work out for you. Ultima stands behind their motors (as in "My Ultima 1xx motor blew up at 1500 miles, I called and they sent me a new one....") Now, if you are not the original purchaser of said Ultima, and/or it is out of warranty, I have no idea what they will do.

For sure, I don't imagine there would be much covering engine warranties for second hand purchasers, especially ones without paperwork like me in this case. As far as the general output quality of Ultima I did find some forum discussion placing them somewhere below the quality of S&S but well above Revtech.
