Help needed - 1986 FXSTC cranks but doesnt start - fuel ok, no spark at the spark plugs. Voltage ok entering the ignition coil, but at the exit of the ignition coil no voltage - before that the positive terminal from the baterry disconnected with the motor running,
during a trip due to vibrations and maybe that shot the ignition coil.
I bought a new ignition coil, 4 ohms at the primary circuit (previous only measured 0.8, BUT STILL NO SPARK AT THE SPARK PLUGS.
What can it be? The ignition module? Could it be also shot because of the battery terminal disconnecting?
My 85 died on me once while riding home. The ground wire from the coil had broken from the ring terminal where it attaches to the frame. I unscrewed the terminal and just pinched the wire underneath it and screwed it back down, and it fired right up. I was going to put a new ring terminal on when I got home. This happened about 25 years ago and I still need to do that.
Not sure if your customized bike still has the ignition switch in the tank console but Ive had a couple of ring terminals break on my 86 at the ignition switch and cause loss of something that Id rather have lol
Pop off the nose cone cover, check the pick up sensor in there. If you see what looks like a melting goo ,that’s where you start. I’m assuming it’s the stock ignition?
Coil and spark plug wires are easy enough to check with a multi meter to see if they are still good or not, while really sounds like the trigger side of the works that is the problem instead.
So would start with cleaning the internal ignition switch contacts to make sure they are not the problem, and pull the Cam chest nose coer to figure out what you have in play, if stock sensor and melting. Also, would see if the bike has a Voes system, since if you have a cracked vacuum line off the intake, than it will kill the coil trigger as well.
