Default mechanical speedo drivers

I've asked about sppedos in the past and I have one more question: On my bobbed '89 Softail, with after market front wheel (21 inch), I just discovered I have a mechanical speedo drive in place. If I wanted to get a speedometer hooked up to it, how would I find out the ratio speedo I need and in regards to the cord, how do I connect it to the drive unit? Do I need to remove the front tire to access it? Thanks

Ratio is usually 2240:60 for this year/model bike Drive units cost about $60.00 However if the front wheel is dual flanged the more expensive drive unit($80.00) might have to be used CCI shows it as p/n 26738

Assuming you have the right drive unit for your wheel, just get a speedo with a ratio that matches the year/model that the drive/wheel size came from. You could also count revolutions of the wheel and the cable and do some math, but it would probably be no more accurate. To connect it, you just insert the cable end into the drive and screw the cable into the drive. The other end has a fitting like coax.
