Default trying to set static timing - new cam install

I just installed a new S&S cam in my 95 Evo - pinion mark is lined up with cam mark as well as oil breather mark. When I try to find tdc on front cylinder, none of the marks will line up! Is this normal? I went several revolutions just to make sure I'm not 180 deg off.
Anyone else have this problem? I'm used to chevy engines - tdc equals timing marks on cam & crank lining up.
Help! School starts next week & I have to get this thing back on the road - my daughter is fed up with me borrowing her car - LOL

I can't remember the math or the relative positions of parts at the moment, but if the key is in place when the pinion gear goes on and all marks are lined up, you're good.
Find TDC on the flywheel under the timing plug with the rear valves "on the rock" for front cylinder firing stroke TDC...

Yeah, it's normal.

Your camshaft timming marks are'nt going to line up when your front cyl is at TDC.

Rear valves "on the rock" - you're gonna have to dummy it up for me, bro. Does that mean rear cylinder at tdc?

Dont think either of your cyl's will be at TDC when your cam, pinion and breather marks are lined up.

As long as these marks did all line up when you installed the camshaft and breather, now just remove your timming plug, and turn the motor over with the tire, till the line on the crank is dead center in the timming hole. Has to be on the COMPRESSION stroke on the front cyl thou.

Sorry 'bout that. Grew up on British bikes and some expressions won't go away.
When the front cyl is coming up on compression stroke, the rear is coming up on exhaust stroke. The exhaust valve is closing and the intake is beginning to open (on the rock) near TDC of the exhaust stroke. Of course the exact degrees of all that is depending on the cam. And by geometry, the rear cylinder reaches TDC about 2 degrees before the front. Some models had 2 advance timing marks on the flywheel. But they only have one actual TDC mark on the flywheel

More info than you need, just always use the front cylinder for ignition purposes. Have fun

Ok - so I followed all the pushrod adjusting steps. Low & behold! It started right up!
I'm still off a smidge on the timing & one of the lifters is clattering a bit more than the others - but it starts & runs.
