If your running stock springs and a mild cam your system won't be stressed as much so I would just go ahead and replace the cam but check out the end play in the cam before pulling it apart I like to run about 005 you can then measure the 2 cams and compare them to determine the shim needed. Next you will have to make sure the back lash in the pinion to cam gear is correct, you will need some checking pins and a micrometer or you could just remove the gear from your original cam and put it on the new one to keep the matched set. There is a check ball in the oil pump that prevents the oil from draining out of the tank. Only whats in the cam chest will drain out, just make sure you add some oil to the cam chest before you fire it up. I would then change out the oil after running it for a couple of hundred miles as there will be a bit of a run in with the cam not much though. If you happen to remove the lifter blocks make sure you have the alignment tool as otherwise the lifters will not track straight on the cam and will cause excess wear. The alignment tools are cheap, get 2 of them as you need 2 of them if you remove your lower rocker boxes.
