Default How to inspect for a worn compensator

In another thread I asked about a clunk I was getting. Well I pulled and inspected my compensator. I noticed the teeth or cogs or whatever you call them on the slide cam are very shiny on the ends. Also the edges on two of them have some small chips in them. I don’t want to shell out cash for a new compensator just yet but figured I would ask on here. Does this sound like wear to you guys?

And everything else on the primary and final drive has been checked. I am basically down to this. Oh and the compensator nut was certainly torqued to spec.

The only bike I had a problem with compensator wear was an old British bike. The designs are similar. Wear showed itself by the contact surface breaking up on the two parts and thin slivers of metal in the primary oil. Yours doesn't sound like that. That leaves the primary chain, or possibly the alternator rotor? If that starts moving it will probably make similar noises.

Best of luck with this one!

Take the cover and check the spring stack height. Should be close to .700 .

Just because it was torqued to spec, doesn't mean it was tight!!!! Gige the inside a good look to ensure that there isn't some cred in there preventing it from going on all the way. Are all the washers and spacers in place???

Check the crankshaft splines where the compensator mechanism fits on. Pull the rotor and makes sure the splines are straight with no wear showing.

Thanks guys. I pulled the rotor and the splines looked great. However I did not check the rotor itself. I will check that tonight. All the washers and spacers were in place but I will double check again and reference the manual as well.

Just pulled the clutch basket all the way and compensator. All splines looks excellent on both the shafts and pulley/basket. The rotor also looks great. I am going to re-torque it all to spec and see how she does and report back. Oh and one more thing the clutch hub nut had red loctite on it. The compensator nut DID NOT have any loctite on it. She was tight as heck but once I broke it loose it just spun free.

Don't forget to check the front pulley on the tranny. We had a bike in the shop last week that was "making a funny noise when I start, let off and get back on the throttle", turned out to be the little allen head locking bolt broke and the pulley nut had back completely off. This might be worth looking at before you put everything back together.
