I was in the oil forum and developed a headache reading 84 pages of differing opinions. I would rather develop that headache here with other EVO owners.
Mine has 70k mi, oil cooler added, stock carb, hi-flo air filter and aftermarket performance pipes. I am a daily rider and ride at least 60 mi daily. Is there a one-oil-for all I can use? I cruise hwy mostly and run 70-90 mph.
BTW, I ask bec I just got this 1987 FLHS ElectraGlide Sport, and gave in to Harley after riding Yamahas for years. My last bike was a '97 Royal Star Tour Deluxe, and I used (Dino) Yamalube every 5k-6k miles.
I have always stuck with Harley brand oil, but would also like alternatives - and I AGREE about the 84 pages in the oil section! Harley 20W-50 in the crankcase, Harley's "Formula Something ("1" or "+1" or something like that) in both the trans. and primary. If there were one oil that would work well in all three it would be great. Mine is a '98 fatboy with 65K miles, similar setup as yours.
Valvoline vr-1 20-50- wt or their mc oil which ever is easiest to get for the motor. Rotella t 15-40 wt diesel oil for the primary. Store brand 70-90 wt gear oil for the trans. You'll get the best bang for the buck. Change motor oil at 4-5k, rest at 10k . If you change them when they're due, that bike will last forever.,,
Lucas 20w50 for the engine and primary, Lucas 75/90 for the tranny. You won't believe how smooth the tranny is now and most of the clunk when shifting is gone. Of course, we all know what opinions are like........
Oh yeah, and get ready for some nasty posts about "another oil thread". I agree with you that it's hard to read through some of the old ones.
I use royal purple ( true synthetic) 20-50.
In my sportster days I could use it in both the motor and trans.
In my 4 stroke skidoo with power adder I run am soil 0-40
I Beleive Amsoil also has 20-50 for air cooled as well.
My bike doesn't like full synthetics in the motor. I run HD non-synthetic in the motor, Mobil 1 ATF in the primary, and Mobil SCH630 in the transmission.
Oh dear, you just had to go and ask about oil didn't you? ;-)
Why not ask which is the best carburettor while you are at it???
For the record the only oils you should use are the ones I tell you to use......
Ohhhh, crap... I won't ask about carburators since I have no interest in switching mine out, haha! Soooo what oils DO you recommend? I see a lot of your reply posts and figure you know what you are talking about, even though I had great feedback in my original post.
