Default 93 Electra Glide Ignition switch jacked up

This is a weird one. Somehow my ignition switch on my 1993 E-Glide has gotten messed up.

So, normally, it goes off is turned left, then on, then acc.

Well somehow, the off is still off, but when I turn it to "On" I get lights but no headlight and no ignition. To start my bike I have to turn it all the way right to "ACC" and it's kind of hard to turn, I sort of have to jam it over to the right. At that point, I can start it up.

So freakin weird. I took the switch barrel thing out (the part that actually holds the key) and it looked OK. I'd like to remove the whole part without taking off the fairing... can that be done?

Anyone ever see theses switched get out of synch like that?

Thanks

I've never heard of this problem .... but .... maybe this video will help you remove the switch assy.

ltrbx,
Let us know if you make and use the tool shown on the video that Uncle Larry provided. Be interesting to know if this works on our vintage bike.

Thanks guys, but that's not the problem. I removed my ignition switch (the part that actually accepts the key- the part that turns) by watching that video and it seems fine. It's the "female" part that the turning mechanism that seems to be rotated out of place some degrees.

Rash I never made the tool, my ignition just came out. A screwdriver worked to turn the ignition.

What I want to do is remove the whole ignition assembly and fix it. AND I want to do that without removing the fairing.

what he was after with the video is that there are multiple cams that the key assembly turns.

IF a screwdriver is used then a cam may be skipped, while another turns...now you have the various cams out of sync.

that's why a squashed piece of copper tubing works well.

this same question comes up on the touring forum about 3 times a week.

the current mechanism is much the same

So, yeah, I can't @#$#$@%%$!@ figure out how to pull the ignition out. Do I have to remove the whole fairing?

After I pull the key part out like in the vidoe above, can I unscrew the whole assembly?

Sort of like step 11?

You're going to have to take off the outer fairing and get the handlebars out of the way and remove a tamper shield as well. Newer bikes are quite a bit easier. The manual was invaluable when I did mine.

This is assuming your 93 is similar to my 92. I think it is.

While I had the fairing apart for my '94 this winter, I remembered there was a recall on the ignition switch which I never had done as I never allowed my bike to go back to the dealer. You might check to see if it is also for your '93. The dealer I have been dealing with the last few months checked it for me and it was still in effect. They originally told me I needed to bring the bike in and have them do it but as I didn't want them to remove new paint, they allowed me to swap out the switch myself. It was on like $45 if I had to buy it. As a note to get the fairing completely off, under the decal there are 2 screws that need to be removed.
