I've got a fuel leak coming from the wire bundle that goes up into the fuel tank on the left side, bottom, front of the tank. It's just in front of where the fuel lines thread into the tank. How does this seal in the tank and how do I fix this? Any help is appreciated.
Ok, I disconnected the plug under the tank that the two wires that come out of the tank are wired too. It appears one wire is for the fuel pump (no fuel pump noise when turning the switch on) and one wire is for the fuel gauge (no fuel gauge movement when turning the switch on). So now the question is, how does this two-wire bundle seal in the tank and how do you repair this leak? Anyone have any experience with this?
Cant find what I'm looking for but if its like others there is a tube that goes all the way through the tank to the gauge on top. Mine had a seam leak under the gauge and I used some gas tank putty to seal it. Look under your gauge to see if it is leaking there.
No, it is leaking under the tank where the two-wire bundle goes up into the tank. There is no tube involved, it's two wires that penetrate up into the tank. I have a service manual but I can't find anything that says how the penetration is sealed around the wires.
There is a tube that goes up into the left side tank and exits under the phony left side gas cap/fuel gauge. The power for the fuel pump goes to the panel that is located center top of the tank that also allows you to access the fuel pump. The leak is probably at either the top or bottom of the tube where it is welded to the tank. Gas tank putty will fix it, or you gould use JB Weld. Hope this helps.

Ahhh, I see what you guys are talking about now. I took off the "fake" fuel cap/fuel gauge and saw the plate and wires in there with the gasket underneath. I tightened the torx screws a little and so far no more leak. I'll get the gasket anyway so I have it if I need to replace it. I found a great youtube video of a guy showing how to change it on a 96 softail. Thanks for the help.
