Ape Hanger Size. Your Thoughts (Evo Custom Rigid)
Hey everyone... been a while since I have posted here, but my Dad and I are beginning to tear down my bike to change out a few things as well as shoot a coat of paint.
Changes to be made:
- old standard FLHT fenders
- spring solo seat
- ape hangers
- spot lights
- paint
- other misc brackets, etc...
This is the first time I have ever looked into ape hangers, and wanted some opinions from you all. I'm about 5'10" tall, and with the style of my bike, what size ape hangers do you think would put my hands about shoulder height (maybe a little higher)?
I don't ride this bike on long trips typically. Mainly just cruise it around town (bar hoppin' - well, not really into going to bars, but you know what I mean).
Thanks for your input... looking forward to your thoughts!
Here is a quick video of my bike in it's current state:
I'm 5'9. With 18's straight up, they were 8" over my shoulders. If I put my windshield on and pulled them closer, they were only a couple inches over my shoulder. Just depends on what angle you want. If I wanted straight up and shoulders I'd go like 14's or something...I have stock risers.
1" risers with 16 " apes and you'll be happy, very happy. Whatever YOU decide add 2 inches. Trust me because I know from experience. You could buy 16s and use a four inch riser that won't look terrible then say it's too nigh and go down to a shorter riser and add an extra pair of chromed zip ties to tighten the cable slack. Or start with 2 inch risers and do what I said but I'm not a fan of apes and tall risers.
Your bike my man
I'm 5'10" with 18" apes on shorty risers (3"?) and my avatar shows how it rides with the bars just back off vertical. I run them closer to me and that makes a bit lower than you see in the avatar.

Thanks everyone! Your comments will help me a lot!
I am almost done tearing the bike completely down. Once we finish fabricating the seat mount (for a spring seat) and receive the seat, I will put the bike back into a roller, sit on it, and try to get an idea on exactly what size bars to go along with the risers I have now. I will post some pics when I get to that point.
