Evo top end(first timer)
The older ones had a cutout and a tab.
Sounds like your having a blast getting it back together. The cam shims should be flat at least the ones I've used. Get yourself some strong magnets for holding the lifters up into the lifter blocks and the cam will slide right in with no issues. I've used piano wire bent in half stuck in the oil holes of the lifters but soon found out magnets are what all the cool guys are using.
Just realized your talking the backing shim or spacer , its what Scex3x said.

I have a 98 FXD and I have the round thrust washer-no 45 cut out or tabs. I've read other threads on this forum claiming the MOCO changed from the 45 cut tabbed thrust washers to the plane round one early or mid 90's.
I ended up with a .065 shim to get to .016 gap btw. That was the biggest one I had.

Ok...parts will be here saterday, just to make sure I got this going right... On the timing, When I put the cam in, does it matter where the pistons are?(top or bottom) When I put the cam in, timing mark was at top, so I lined the mark up with the cam and the breather lined up good too, so I should be good to go,right? Just kinda double checking things here...

I hope everyone is around this weekend because I'm sure there will be questions..LOL!!
