Default Found the Dang Rattle

Been chasing a rattle in the rear section of the White Bike for months while stopped and low speeds. Tail light quit working on the way to work and pulled the cover to check it, found glass bulb had slid out of the brass base slightly and resting on the metal of the tail light base causing a sound that traveled and couldn't pinpoint it, could only laugh about the simple things that drive you nuts. New 1157 and should be good for another 16 years

That's funny. I thought my compensator was coming apart. There was a horrible sound coming from the primary in that area. Sounded like a bunch of rocks inside there. Ends up being the rear cylinder exhaust shield on the left side rubbing on the passenger floor board mount. One new clamp and a slight adjustment on the shield and the compensator is fixed.
I also have a worn out drive pulley that squeaks and you'd swear the squeak was coming from the fairing.

Glad you got it fixed. Nothing worse that chasing ghosts.

At 13 years old and well past 100,000 miles on the Road Glide, I've found squeaks and rattles everywhere over the years ( and eliminated every one eventually.) The exhaust shields, the rubber hangers for the mufflers, the saddlebag lid rubbers, fairing brackets, glove box doors.... even the motor mounts.

And now you give me another one to look out for! Good catch!

It was easy once the bulb failed but I was at the point of the cause of the rattle was going to have to fall off, I'm a shop foreman at a large truck dealership and help techs find problems when they are stumped and this simple repair was testing my profession but you just gotta laugh when stuff like this is found when your looking for loose mufflers, fender, turn signal bar, brackets and GunslingerTom knows what I'm talking about

I know what your talking about all the way around. I drive big trucks. I had an 81 Freightliner once that developed a noise so horrible I was literally going stir crazy. I could hear it in the roof. I changed every gasket on the clearance lights, then the air horns, tore the headliner and electronics off the ceiling and made sure everything was secure there. After a month of going nuts I took it to the dealership and the tech said, "you lost a bolt out of the windshield visor." And he said it without even looking at it. Sure enough, that's what it was. One single bolt from the drivers side of the visor. He ran a bolt with some loctite into it and sent me down the road. I think he could tell I was actually starting to go mad, because he didn't charge me a cent. I took my trucks to that shop anytime I couldn't fix them myself, because of that tech. A good one is worth his weight in gold when your rig is your money maker.
Sorry to go off the subject, I'm just to trying to express how much of a pain it is to live with those kind of noises.

My bike's favorite game is called "guess what this noise is". We've been playing that game for almost 20 years now.

Sometimes, I swear that bike is haunted. Noises come from the darndest places and seem to appear and disappear at random and travel far from their source.

I think I need an exorcist, not a mechanic.

I had the same exact thing happen on my 95 Heritage Softail. The belt drive pulley squeak came right up from my windshield.
