Default FLHR tank fitment question?

Anyone know if a 96 FLHR tank will fit a 97 Road King? I think it will, but what do I know : ( - I know there was a frame change to the FLH in 97, so I am wondering if the 96 tank will fit my 96 RK? I know with a little fabrication, anything can be made to fit - but I want to go with a bolt on scenario here. I am going to use a HD carberated gas tank, instead of modifying my 97 RK's EFI tank. I will be converting from EFI to carb this summer. I decided to shelf all the EFI parts, in the rare case I need to sell the bike at a later date - and buyer wants to revert back to the Moretti Morelli EFI

Also; anyone know of a good online source for small batches of HD factory paint? - as I will have to repaint whatever used carby tank I locate.

All you need to convert to carb is a Pingel gas tap kit for your current tank. Remove the EFI stuff inside, store on shelf, fit tap, go! It isn't difficult to swap back from what I can see.

Thanks Graham andTom84XST for the replies! I appreciate your input as always : ) I already have the Pingel MM to carb tank conversion fittings. It was my understanding; that once you cut out the soldered fitting inside the EFI tank, you couldn't revert back to EFI at a latter point. Not that I would; but with this great economy where I live (NE IL), if things continue for me, I may need to sell my bike : ( Some folks may want to go back to EFI. I figured if I had all the Morelli crap in a box, it may be more appealing to a buyer?
I located a local guy with a 96 FLHR carby tank, for $100. It has some small dents, and will need to be repainted to match my 97 winter green, or whatever color Harley calls it? I am fairly sure it will fit my 97, but with the frame change in 97 - I just wanted to be sure. Can't afford to buy parts that won't fit : (

To put a 2009 tank on my 1983 FLHT I had to drill one hole. The front mount holes were the same.

I was told they won't work but have never tried it so no in stone help here. Purchased another EFI tank but dam a carb tank would be easier

See my thread on fitting a 6 gallon tank.

Graham,
Wow! That was a great write up on fitting that late model 6 gal tank : ) An extra 5.5 US gallons would be great! I perused EPay; and those tanks seem to go for some pretty fair coin! If I went that route, I would loose my RK tank speedo. I decided to pass on that local 96 FLHR tank - as by the time I fixed the dents and painted it, I would be close to what a nicer one would go on Ebay. Now if only I could score a Mystic Green 90's FLH carby tank, I would be set!

Bill, the tank I bought had a small dent, I reckon a showroom injury. I couldn't smell any gas in it! Fortunately the chap I used to paint it was a panel beater in an earlier life and removed it without trace. I think I paid around 160 dollars for it, including shipping to the UK, however all the other parts needed cost a good deal more. Nothing on an Evo tank will transfer over. Fitted photos to follow before too long!

Graham,
You got one heck of a deal on your late model tank, especially with the shipping included! I imagine if I wait long enough, I might locate a better deal on Ebay. Like I mentioned; I would hate to lose my speedo on the tank - as is the factory setup on my 97 RK. I am starting to lean towards just grinding out the soldered EFI fitting (inside my 97 tank) and go with the Pingel conversion - and be done with it. Looking forward to those pic's : )
