I have a 93 FXR with S&S 89" stroker. Mild head work, mikuni 42 carb, Comp set at 9.55:1 & V-Thunder 3020 cam. Pulls like a freight train from 2k to just above 5k. S&S rep told me that a 6k redline was a very safe limit for long term use. I'm still running stock valve springs & expect long life out of the valve train. Woods cams make GREAT power but all their ramps are murder on valve train parts.
1997 bagger. I was looking at the 6H and the Mackie 580 at first b4 I was thinking about going a bit milder. Do both of these require roller rockers? Maybe I should just go with one of these two.Honestly I don't know if I will be happy with a mild cam. Is 10.2: 1 ok for the Mackie cam ? Just wouldn't want it to be soft in the bottom.

The W6 will work and a 3020 is a good one also so your head should spin, 10.0-1 is a safe comp for a heavy bagger with a Woods or 580, a light bike and the DME 580 42 intake closing @ 10.2-1 would be optimal with a adjustable ignition. No I don't have roller's currently in it, has been like this for 6 years, not going to promote not use them though. We put the DM580 in my buddy's 80" light bike at 10.0-1 with mild headwork and it is a handfull, he embarasses alot of bigger engines, it also doesn't have rollers but still not going to promote not using them.
I can run the Woods W6H with 40 intake closing 10.0-1 on a 2nd level ignition setting solo and drop it to 3 when 2 up fully loaded with a tourpack so that is why the 42 intake DME580 will live at 10.2-1 in a light bike, comparing the Woods 40 intake is building more compression than the DME580 so my reasoning of 10.2-1 will live with more compression with slight bleedoff. You will also need to pay attention to detail with setting up the Woods or it will be noisy but set right is dominant, DME's has milder lobes but works with a neat design of more duration but less intake timing to keep the bottom end. The Mackie has a cool idle with the extra duration and the Woods is undercover, V-Thunders are good cams also but don't try a 5005 with 10.0-1 trust me on this one.
Your 510 cams are safe and will get the job done but I don't cut my 580-590 cams any slack everytime I ride but have some good parts in the heads.
