Default Stranded....

Well, my "runs like a charm" bike stranded me today. $100 to get it home. I'm not even going to look at it again this weekend, but thought I would get some feedback. Here's what happened:

I rode to a state park this morning for a "celebration Of Life party for my biker buddy John who died in January. I went to where I thought it was and shut the bike off. Everything was fine. Found out I was in the wrong part of the park, went to start, and it won't start. Cranks over fine, but won't start. Thinking I flooded it, I pulled the a/c cover off and let it sit.

Turned it over, fires once or twice, carb catches fire, and dies. I tried and tried. Crank it over and over, eventually, it will fire once or twice, carb catches fire, and dies. I'm thinking something internal bit the dust, valve spring or something. When it tries to start, nothing sounds out of the ordinary, but the carb catching fires bothers me. Any thoughts?

sorry for your problems with the ride, the 1st thing that comes to mind is, did you come acrossed water and get a short in the electrical system that causes early fire, or did the coil get moister on to short it out...

thoughts off the top of my head, good luck someone here should a better idea for you

Nope! It's a beautiful sunny day, low 80's. No moisture.

another thought, plug wire came loose, if it run fine before shut down then it will be something simple... the odds of something major going wrong are slim to non if it ran fine...

i had a friend put a stick pin into my plug wire and my bike did close to the same thing until i found it, needless to say he isnt a friend anymore

You're probably right, it should be something simple. The symptoms are ugly though. I'm going to get some new plugs and take a look at the carb and give it a go. Won't be til Monday though. The fire in the carb bothers me. Never seen it do that before. It's like the heat from the cylinder is coming back up to the carb and igniting the fuel. Scary.

More than likely an ignition problem...bad coil or ignition sensor...or even a loose wire on the coil...carb catching fire with it running bad, and air filter off is pretty common...wouldn't sweat it.

The first thing I did was look at the ignition module! Should have looked at the carb first. I loosened the backplate and the carb was just flopping around outside the intake! One of the mounts for the back plate rotted out, so my carb fell out of the intake. Problem solved. Now I just need to find another backplate for a stock cv carb. Anyone got one laying around the garage? Maybe I can rig something up to hold the carb in place.
