Default Acceleration levels off @ 80mph

HI guys & ladies,

1998 fxd
44,000miles

just put this bike back together i rebuilt it after a friend laid it down

acceleration feels smooth, crisp, and quick until i hit around 80mph then i dont have enough power to pass a semi, it just seems to plateau. i can squeeze a little more out of it but not much more than 85 or so.

thanks for your time and help ML&R

This can happen if you have a shim under the needle and it gets stuck sideways and jams the needle up from its position in the slide.

Could be blocked air filter, incorrect float height....give it a major service and check all your settings/adjustments are correct and then get back to us.

Assuming it just runs out of gitty-up but continues to run smoothly I would check for a dragging brake.

Easy enough, just take it around the block and stop without using the brakes, get off bike and check brakes for excessive heat, watch out they could be real hot, also feel the wheel hubs and make sure they are also still cool to the touch.

Harleys are over-geared in top, how well does it run in fourth gear?

Before you tear the carb apart, make sure the petcock screen is not partially clogged.

This gearing calculator for a 96 Ultra may be a little different from your bike, but would be close, keep it in 4th gear longer.
