It has to be your crank coming apart. It is the largest piece of reciprocating mass in your motor and the only thing that could cause vibes like that. Tear it down and rebuild it right. Flywheels trued, new timkens, rod bearings, cam bearing, pistons, rings, lifters, cam etc...

. You may be right but I still can't agree as it smooths out. At 45-50 mph in 4th it's like driving a Cadillac. Just not as comfy

It may have a sweet spot where the reciprocating mass will "even" out and it will run smoothly at a certain RPM range. I bet if you run it up higher you'll find another spot where it vibes like that.
I mean here is the thing... the crank may just be out of true enough to do what it's doing and it's not coming apart at all. All you can do is ride it and see, or tear it down. You need to swap those lifters anyways...
I'm maxed out on the harley budget. I can't spring for lifters until I know it's fixed. I was thinking over the winter to do the lifters and cam bearing. I have to have this sorted out by then I hope. If there was only a way to start it without the whole chaincase on there. Is like to just fire the engine up. That would point me in the right direction

Find some way to spin the motor really fast at the crank pin is all I can tell you... don't know enough to really help you with that one.

Rattle gun will start it but you may end up in hospital so don't tell them I told you to do it. I have done this with outboard motors but really......its very dangerous....I have to wear special magic underpants when I do it.
Yep. Or he need to get a pair of channel locks and be a man. Maybe he can ratchet strap those channel locks to it so it doesn't come off like we did with my fork caps.
