Default 93 FLHS Slip ons

Hi Gents,

I recently purchased a 93 FLHS, and as it had stock pipes, I wanted some more noise...

I purchased some Wyatt Gatling slip ons, however it looks as though the connection to the head pipe is different.. the slip ons I bought have this sort of "rib" right were they are to connect..

Any ideas? or any suggestions as to what other mufflers I can buy?

Cheers

Tom

You won't find many options for pre '96 exhaust head pipes, There's basically two options. 1. Cut off the stock flange and bolt on the set you bought or 2. Replace the head pipes with '96 or later head pipes without the flanges.

Thanks Rizzo,

What I have on the bike ( Stock I belive) seems to look like the later year head pipes..

Do you know what the earlier flange/connection arrangement was supposed to look like?

1990 FLHS here, owned from new. Our earlier bikes had a different clamping arrangement where the muffler and pipe meet, which uses a V cross-section clamp to pull them together, along with a copper sealing ring between them. They are awful darned things and I'm surprised a bike has survived this long with them! I doubt if you will find any current mufflers for those pipes and personally I wouldn't bother!

As rizzo points out, you can saw off the small flare at the tip of the pipes, after removing the mufflers. It will be easier to do that by taking the pipes off the bike. Having done that you should be able to slide on a pair of later spec mufflers. Header pipes up to 2008 will fit our bikes, my Supertrapp system below is 2008. Some 2007 and all 2008 systems have O2 sensor ports which need blanking plugs, which is the only drawback of the later pipes.

If you plan on keeping your bike and servicing it, now would be a good time to get a factory service manual. You can compare the different set-ups on-line here.

I think my bike already has the later muffler attachment arrangement.. Its the slip ons that I bought that have the wonky "flare" in them...

I guess I should have checked before I ordered them...

Maybe I can salvage them by cutting off the "flare" and welding on a straight section of pipe to fit over the head pipes..

Thanks for the help!

I dumped my stock system years ago, so unfortunately can't photograph it to help you. Modifying the mufflers may be a bit of a chore, so best of luck!

They are indeed the correct mufflers for an original system. That raised ring mates up to the flare I've mentioned on the end of the stock pipe, then an odd-shaped clamp locks the two together. The short length of tube sticking out from that flange goes inside the header.
