Default help w/ stage1 kit ?

Here my thing I have a 06-fatboy EFI. I put on some samson pipes and brought the bike to stealer for re-map. Had them drop in the K&N filter., But they told me they didn't have the stage one kit to remove the filter backplate.$400 dollars later theysaid the filter alone would do almost the same thing. My buddy tells me the filter alone does nothing and got screwed. Since then did my own 5000 mile service so not to take bike back to dealer and was wondering if the stage ! install was something I couild do myself? I wouldn't guess I would need to remap ecm. Is the install pretty staight forward? Has anyone done thier own .Thanks.....sorry for the ramble.

yes, the stage one process is easy and straight forward. You won't be able to do ECM download from the moco though... you would need a PCIII to dial in the tune (I still don't know of the new o2 sensors will compensate adequately for a stage I change or not)

but, your question is "is the install pretty straight forward" = so "yes"

Chop,
I have an 06 heritage & my brother has an 06 fatboy. On my bike I installed the Harley screaming eagle air filter...on his I installed the K&N. I am absolutely NOT a fan of harley dealerships & the way they try & get into your pocket...but in this case I have to admit the screaming eagle stage1 backplate was made of fairly heavy duty cast aluminum, while the K&N kit had these really cheesy aluminum standoff pins. The harley kits is most definetly better made (and I can't stand giving money to the stealer). As far as your map goes...anytime you make a change that makes any kind of difference in your air intake, or exhaust it can make a difference on how your map performs. I reccomend you have a look at the power commander PCIII USB (You'll never have to pay for a map again!!!). I got mine & my brothers online for $270 from an outfit called fuelmottousa & they came with custom maps installed for our particular setups. Both of us are very satisfied with the PCIII USB & my brother is planning on shelling out the extra bucks for the Harley screaming eagle stage 1 kit that I'm running on my heritage. Incidently K&N does make an aftermarket oiled filter that fits the screaming eagle stage1 kit (that kit comes with a dry filter) I'm running the K&N oiled filter on my SE setup.

Here Here!
I agree with the previous poster . . . Clutchglass

I hate spending $$$ when I don'thave to. I installed the Screamin' Eagle Heavy Breather, PC III & Exhaust myself. I saved myself a ton of money, took my time, and knew the job was done right. I ordered the PC III from fuelmotousa - they mapped it for the build of my bike, and I haven't had a single problem. It runs better then ever. The installation of the intake was the easiest part.

Clutch ...Roy, Thanks for the input, thats what makes every second spent on this site worth while. I kinda got the hose I'm thinking the first time around. Would have liked to have the stage 1 installed @ the time of they did the download, Of coarse the dealer didn't have a kit available then.Doing my own download still scares me a bit, but trying not to have the dealer do anything anymore, that i may be able to handle on my own. I have a laptop how confusing is configuring the ECM. I don't thing the service manual covers anything about that or the install of air claner. Will that come with some detailed instructions if i buy from the dealer? Thanks again

I have an 06 efi fatboy with V&H, SE air filter and the stage 1 download it does the job( i did not do this it was done when i got it). I get some popping on decel and it farts when it is cold. I will get the power commander next spring.
there is a post that shows how to do the filter on the stock backplate. but i think the kit would be better. you can order just the backplate or individual parts. its cheaper to order it seperate than as a kit anyway.
if you already did the download for the pipes and filter the way you have it then NO you dont have to do it again if you change the backplate. the download is for pipes and filter upggrade. PM me i have the part numbers already printed for a friend.

I purchased the SE Heavy Breather, and all the instructions were provided. Using the PCIII with your laptop, and programming it - is VERY easy. Actually - programming the PC III was the easiest part of the whole thing!
