So is the thought here it can be in the distributor ( timer) ?? So if i read you right your saying the drive gear on the distributor could be loose and that’s a fact than it would be better to remove and repair in stead on running a wire?
Now that it runs, take it for a ride with the additional ground wire before you go looking for a complex cause. I dont understand the bushing deal John mentioned because the housing is what the ground goes through, not the shaft on your bike.
So I totally understand how it grounds it self but why would it start doing this in the first place???
And to me adding a ground wire isn’t a fix it’s a patch fix.
I like things to run the way they were designed, so what could cause the loss of a ground?

You dont know thats the problem, thats why I suggested you ride it.
While i totally agree the added ground wire is a band aid so to speak - the dizzy being loose in the cam cover in the first place so it can turn lends its self to loosing the ground so things the way they were from the motor company
1 new nos stuff
cam cover
complete distributor assembly
the dizzy hold down equipment
what are we talking on the cheap side 900 bucks today plus labor verses 3 bucks worth of wire and ends and an hour you can do not a shop at 100 an hour
the dist sits in something to hold it up right i called it a bushing for a better or worse we try to go simple and inexpensive choices
All worth checking out. I’ll try hiding down the drive way , don’t want to go to far just in case I have to push it back home ( I live on a hill )
also the rpm’s are running to high, need to get that down a bit first. By the way what is a dizzy?
You have what we had not long ago the points do not have tungsten any longer on the contact points - what happened is the thing would light a test light when you opened the contacts from bing closed - and would even spark
BUT after dealing with it not wanting to start we roller tried it and found the points would only spark a couple times - so we have delco units in stock and i used one of those and off it went and still starting 5 months later
forgot that happened with all the stuff going on in the shop every day all day
