I live just south of 270/255 on Telegraph in Oakville and I work downtown. I was kind of joking with that "prolly won't die" pic. I do think the "whole" area kind of gets a bad rap on the crime stats and some of that has to do with the separation of city and county and the way the crime stats are reported. I have never really felt unsafe in my travels around the area. I've gone through east St. Louis and North County, though it was usually during the day and I don't typically hang out there or stop. I've felt more unsafe in some sketchy areas of New Orleans than I have in STL.

Well, my uncle was murdered in cold blood in north city, so I admit a certain amount of bias. Wrong place, wrong time (late at night).
Unless you need to be on I 70, I would travel a little north, across I 74, I 72 & 36. Hannibal - mark twain. Marceline - Walt disney. Laclede - general Pershing. Chillicothe - home of sliced bread. Hamilton - home of J.c. Penney. St Joseph - where the Pony Express started and Jesse James ended. Plus entire route from Indianapolis thru St Joseph has very little traffic!
"I go there during the day, and don't stop, and say I feel safe."
I feel safe in St. Louis as a "whole." There are a couple dangerous areas like every large population areas have and I have been through the dangerous areas during the day when the dangerous elements aren't as active. I moved to St. Louis in 2000 and holy **** but I've survived nearly 20 years here.
I saw St Louis took the #1 spot in violent crime on a recent poll. Considering the competition like Baltimore, Detroit and Milwaukee, that's really an achievement.
When you ride through in August, just make sure to wear one of these. The Bruins will have already wiped the ice of the Blues, so it should be a nice conversation starter with the locals.
