We went in 2017 on our way to Sturgis. I call BS on all the talk of downtown being unsafe. We stayed in the Drury Plaza Hotel, very, very safe place. Bike was in a very secure enclosed parking garage. We stopped on the other side of the river to take pics of the Arch, then checked into hotel. Walked down to the Arch, went to the top etc. Found a spot for dinner then walked over to Busch Stadium. They were having a Soccer/Football match that night, caught the pre-game party in Ballpark Village then saw some of the match from a second story bar balcony. Walked back to hotel well after dark, never felt in danger in anyway. Next day walked over to the Old Courthouse, then got on the bike and rode to Union Station. Parked on the street and toured the station for a couple of hours including a cup of coffee. After that we hit Budweiser on the way out of town, did the tour and had a fresh Bud. I have nothing bad to say about the town.
Proceed with caution like you would in any big city and enjoy the town. Good luck.

The chalet is nice. I had my wedding reception there 27 years ago.

All that area is very safe. Travel half a mile north - not so much.
South side of St. Louis is getting just as bad as the north side since the thugs moved there. I have my shop on the north side off of Union and hwy 70 and no one bothers me here. But I make headstones for peoples graves so I guess they get the Hebee Jebees at my place lol
The Embassy Suites over there in St. Charles is really nice, and in a great location to do stuff. You have the riverfront and streets of st. charles both close. They run shuttles to both. My wife uses them for when she has out of town people here for work.

Yeah, that's super nice. I'd rather stay there than the chalet.
I've grown up in this city and it's changed alot since the 50's and 60's and not for the better. A wise person will stay out of the inner city all together. Shooting everynight ! If you want to listen to someone who will give you some insight to what's going on here listen to Bob Romantic on 1190 A.M. everyday at 10 A.M and 4 P.M. Local guy , but he's dead on accessing the problems here and across the country. I think you can access him on the internet too.
Heading out this coming Tuesday. If all goes as planned, Ill be arriving in the St. Louis area Thursday night. I reckon any flood damage yall had back in May has been taken care of that would affect any of my routes through that area? If you happen to see a twisted cherry road glide ultra with VT plate, beep, wave and throw me a cold one!
