I had the same thing happen on a road trip to North Carolina. Pulled in to get gas and my left bag was gone. I asked my buddy, who was riding behind me, if he saw
it fall. Nope. We had been on the road for about 2 hours so there was no use looking for it. I had to buy new rain gear and a bike cover. Did you know that you can't buy
one half of a saddle bag set. lol About a year later I found a set on Ebay. Now I have two right side leather bags.

This thread is making me give both bikes a once over and I found yet another potential issue. But at least I found this one while in the garage.

Yup, it pretty much sucked. I had to replace the bag, ordered thru HD color matched. Then later replaced them both with stretched bags. So I've got a collection of bags good and bad, ha !
At the time when I lost it I was up in MI riding their shitty roads. I thought I was pretty safe having replaced the stock HD quick Zeus style fasteners with actual threaded ***** with thread tape. And still they vibrated loosed. Lessons learned I guess. Now I still use the threaded ***** but with a body and lock washer behind it.

I was on my way home from Alaska. South of Red Deer Alberta, in a raging thunderstorm I took cover in a closed gas station under the pump awning. That is when I noticed my right saddle bag wasn’t there. It was full of tools and spare parts.

When I got home, I called my insurance agent and he said it would be covered. All he needed was an itemized list of what was lost. I came up with about $1,300.00 including the bag and dropped it off at his office. An hour later he calls and says I would have to claim it under my homeowners policy which had a $1,000.00 deductible and filing the claim would cause my insurance premium to go up.

I really dislike Insuance companies sometimes.

One mirror glass, one taillight, one taillight lens, one gas cap, one license plate with bracket, two shifter arms, three gremlin bells and misc. nuts and bolts. Not bad for old Harley's over the course of 50 years.

I know what you mean , my wife works for an insurance company , that's pretty much how it works for me , loose anything whether it's stolen or falls off , it'll come out of your own pocket , sucks .

Besides losing a couple saddlebags, I also had a clevis pin fall off a BMW R100RS. The pin was part of the clutch input shaft assembly. When I squeezed the clutch lever, it went flat against the bars. I replaced the missing pin with a piece of chain link I clipped from a fence on I-55. It worked perfectly and got me home.

Ask any old shovelhead owner about saddle greif, everybody has at least one story. I had forgotten about mine till this thread.
