Default semi-retirement

Well, it looks like the sale of the campground that I have worked at for 27 years, will finally go through on the 31st of October. Being the general manager for most of that time has been great , but the last few years have been tougher . People seem to have developed an attitude of entitlement and irresponsability . Camping sure has changed and people are getting more demanding with all the stress that they cause themselves. My wife and I will be taking a few years off and will travel south for the winter and take a cross canada trip next summer. Anyone know any nice quiet places in Florida to winter with good riding roads? We are leaving here the 1st of November with the motorhome, bike trailer and car, and will be stopping in myrtle beach to visit with some friends for a few days. After that , who knows.. Mark...

My wife and I full-timed for about 4 years back in the early 90's. We spent our first winter in Florida and never got away from the "madening crowd".

We ended up spending most of our time being volunteers and/or seasonal rangers at National Parks. For example, winter at Organ Pipe National Monument in Arizona in the winter and go up to Curecanti in Colorado in the summer. It was those experiences that ended us up here in Tucson.

As you already know, you're in for a neat adventure but I'd be afraid to guess what conditions would belike in Florida15 years later.

Congrats on the semi-retirement. It'll be 35 years before I'm there! Although, I just made "Senior Rider," so maybe I can start receiving Social Security checks in the mail. I'll give them a call and find out.

Congratulations, mark on the semi-retirement. I am a little envious of you. I have to work full time (actually over full-time) for a couple of more years before I can semi-retire. Wife won't let me yet.

As far as where in Florida to check out, I've always enjoyed going to Ormond Beach. It is just north of Daytona, and I believe it is becoming somewhat of a retirement area for snowbirds.

Not sure how the roads are for biking, but the beach there was great when I would drive out there with the family.

Good luck with all your adventures and maybe I'll see you on the road in a couple of years.

Its not Florida, but a lot of people from up north head down toward Brownsville, Tx. and spend the winters. They usually ride up around Lake FAlcon and Lake Amstead and over to the DAvis mountains. The spend a lot of time in Corpus Christie, Tx. too.
There are usually a lot of people in Retirement of hiding from the winter that go down there. Some of them cross over the border and go into Mexico.

I have never lived in Florida. But I have visited a bit. I always thought that if was to move there, I would move to the Keys. When I was there, it had this little town feel that was incredible, IMO. Again, I have never lived there, but sure would be a dream for me. BTW, a lot of people who retire seem to end up in Texas, New Mexico, or Arizona. I, personally, live in NM and I can attest to the great rides here. We have all four seasons here is Albuquerque, living at the base of the Sandia Mountains. The best part is, when we actually get snow, it usually melts off the roads by noon. It is very seldom that we actually have salt, or sand, poured on them. I have been here 27 years, and it isn't that bad, still. LOL

Congratulations on the time off. It will be a long time for the wife and I. She did, however, let me stay home with my girls for a year and a half. It was the best time in my life, to date. I sure do miss spending all my time with my girls.

The coastal counties north of Tampa up to Bronson have some nice roads with modest elevation changes and some nice sweeping curves. The cost of stuff there is easier on the wallet than south of Tampa in the season also. Check out Crystal River and Homossassa areas.
