so far this year we've only been into the upper 30s a couple of days. there were 3 of us that road our bikes to work those days. but i've ridden when it was much colder. so probably as long as it's not raining or any ice, cold won't be a factor.[sm=confused06.gif]
Gas prices aren't really the thing that keeps me from riding this time of year. It's the near freezing and below freezing temperatures in the morning here in NY. Today it was about 19 and while it gets up into the 40's in the afternoon, it's too cold that early for a 72 mile trip to work. A nice heated car does have it's advantages. On the other extreme, gas can go through the roof and I won't stop riding in the warmer weather. That's when parking the car is a no brainer and take the bike to work.
I was out yesterday for about an hour- it was 30 degrees but the roads were dry for the most part. I just got a new gore-tex riding jacket and overpants and wanted to try them out with the fleece liners in. So I'm riding along and noticing that my left arm and side are freezing. I pull over and notice that the vent under the arm was unzipped- closed it and I was warm as toast.
I'd recommend the gear; First Gear Kilamanjaro jacket and overpants. Good stuff- the jacket was about $265 and the pants were $160. I bought them from a place I just came across called New Enough- great service and free shipping. Check them out at newenough.com
Besides using heated gloves, how do you keep your finger tips from going numb when you ride below 40? I went out yesterday. It was about 38. I was good for about 45min, then, several of my finger tips started to go numb. By the time I got home, my left big toe was also numb and stayed numb for about an hour.
